Tourist influx: India’s first 9 months of 2023 see 6.43 million foreign visitors

The Indian government’s efforts to promote tourism have yielded positive results, with 6.43 million foreign tourist arrivals (FTAs) and foreign exchange earnings totaling 1,66,660 crores recorded between January and September 2023, according to a press release from the tourism ministry.

India is strategically promoting itself as a diverse destination, catering to travelers with interests in religious, medical, and cultural exploration. Active participation in renowned international travel fairs like FITUR 2023, ITB Berlin, Arabian Travel Market 2023, and IMEX Frankfurt reflects India’s commitment to enhancing its standing in the global tourism market.

To ensure the best possible experience for visitors, the Ministry of Tourism has implemented several initiatives:

i) Incredible India Tourist Facilitator Certification Programme: It is a digital initiative that establishes an online learning platform to train professional tourist facilitators nationwide, with the goal of enhancing support for tourists.

ii) 24×7 Toll-Free Multi-Lingual Tourist Helpline (1800-11-1363): A dedicated helpline is in place to provide around-the-clock assistance for tourists

iii) E-Visa Facility: The e-Visa system for nationals of 166 countries has been liberalized, with reduced visa fees. It covers five sub-categories: e-Tourist visa, e-Business visa, e-Medical visa, e-Medical Attendant visa, and e-Conference visa.

iv) “Incredible India! Visit India Year 2023”: The Ministry of Tourism has made a strategic declaration to enhance visitor arrivals

v) 1st Global Tourism Investors’ Summit: An event held from May 17-19, 2023, aimed to showcase investible projects and opportunities in the tourism and hospitality sector to both domestic and international investors.

vi) Sanctioned Projects: The Ministry of Tourism has approved 51 projects totaling Rs 737.89 crore under the Assistance to Central Agencies scheme from 2014-15 to 2022-23. These projects encompass various initiatives such as sound and light shows, cruise terminal development, and border tourism, including infrastructure developments at Attari Post and Tanot Post.
