Transportation Security Administration Rolls Out Digital ID Verification for West Virginia Travelers Nationwide

Traveling just got easier for West Virginia residents as the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) now accepts West Virginia-issued mobile driver licenses (mDLs) at security checkpoints nationwide equipped with digital ID readers. This innovation allows travelers to verify their identity seamlessly using their smartphones, reducing reliance on physical identification.

A Convenient Solution for Travelers

Residents who have downloaded the West Virginia Mobile ID app to their smartphones can now use it for identity verification at airports, bypassing the need to hand over a physical ID and boarding pass to TSA officers. This capability is operational at West Virginia International Yeager Airport, Huntington Tri-State Airport, and other participating airports across the United States.

The mobile ID is available to all West Virginia residents free of charge. To access this service, individuals need a valid state-issued license, permit, or non-driver ID. By simply downloading the West Virginia Mobile ID app and following the setup instructions, travelers can integrate this convenient feature into their journeys.

Enhanced Security and Efficiency

West Virginia’s mobile IDs are compatible with TSA’s credential authentication technology (CAT) units, which are equipped with digital ID readers and cameras. These units:

• Capture a real-time photo of the traveler.
• Match the traveler’s face to the ID on file.
• Confirm that the individual has a valid boarding pass for the day.

Once the traveler is cleared, the photos are deleted to ensure privacy and security. Importantly, while the mobile ID simplifies the security process, TSA recommends carrying an acceptable physical ID or passport as a backup.

Expanding Adoption of Digital IDs

West Virginia is the 14th state to offer digital IDs compatible with TSA’s digital ID technology. Other states and territories with similar systems include Arizona, California, Colorado, Georgia, Hawaii, Iowa, Louisiana, Maryland, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Puerto Rico, and Utah. TSA’s systems also accept Google ID Pass, enhancing flexibility for travelers.

TSA continues to expand its digital ID infrastructure, with plans to activate additional digital ID readers at airports nationwide. This effort aligns with the agency’s broader commitment to improving security and streamlining the travel experience.
