Thousands of passengers are facing travel chaos as British Airways and easyJet cancel numerous flights, causing disruptions on the eve of the bank holiday weekend.

On Thursday, both airlines cancelled multiple flights, leaving travellers stranded or forced to rearrange their plans.

British Airways cancelled 50 domestic and European flights to and from London Heathrow, with easyJet grounding 10 flights at London Gatwick.

Passengers reported being left to fend for themselves across European airports due to air traffic control and weather-related delays. H

The hotel rates, driven by the Edinburgh Fringe and Television Festival, were high and many passengers were frustrated by the lack of support from the airlines. Under air passenger rights rules, airlines are required to provide accommodations, meals, and alternative flights.

The disruptions also extended to other European airports, including Dusseldorf, Marseille, Naples, and Pisa for British Airways flights. EasyJet canceled 36 flights at London Gatwick, affecting around 5,000 passengers, and cancelled 10 more flights on Friday.

The cancellations come on what was predicted to be the busiest day of the year for air travel, but due to the widespread disruptions, the target is expected to be missed. Both British Airways and easyJet cited adverse weather conditions as the cause of the disruptions. British Airways apologized to affected customers and offered rebooking options or full refunds, while easyJet faced criticism for not providing adequate accommodations.

The chaos highlights the challenges airlines face in managing disruptions during peak travel times and the importance of maintaining customer support and communication during such situations.
