Travelodge has had a year worth celebrating. The UK’s first budget hotel chain has marked its strongest period of growth in more than a decade, opening 21 new hotels and welcoming over 1,800 additional rooms into its portfolio. Behind these numbers is a clear focus on what Travelodge does best: making comfortable, reliable, and affordable stays accessible to more people.

The new openings stretch across the UK, from bustling cities like London and Cardiff to popular coastal and regional destinations such as Skegness and Harwich. Beyond the UK, Travelodge has also strengthened its international presence with new hotels in Spain, including Madrid and Bilbao, bringing its trusted offering to even more travellers.

These additions include a mix of brand-new builds and thoughtfully rebranded properties, ensuring each location fits seamlessly into its surroundings. Sustainability has also played a role in the expansion, with careful consideration given to design and development. Together, these openings reflect Travelodge’s ongoing commitment to growing responsibly while meeting rising demand for quality budget accommodation.

New Hotels and Key Developments Across the UK

The most significant expansion includes four new-build hotels in Skegness, Harwich, London Beckenham, and London Chiswick, alongside 17 rebrand acquisitions from other brands. Among the highlights is the opening of the Skegness Seafront property, which features the first-ever top-floor 85 Bar Café with panoramic views of the sea, offering a unique dining experience for visitors.

In addition, Travelodge has made significant investments in converting two vacant office buildings in London into hotels. One of these properties, located opposite Liverpool Street Station, will be transformed into a hotel featuring the brand’s latest design and an 85 Bar Café. Another conversion project at St. Paul’s Cathedral, set to open in 2026, will help cater to the increasing demand for budget-friendly accommodations in central London.

Sustainability and Innovation at the Core of Travelodge’s Expansion

Sustainability is a key focus of Travelodge’s development strategy. The new-build properties include a range of energy-efficient features, such as air source heat pumps, low-energy LED lighting, motion-sensing controls, and water-saving technology. Additionally, the London Chiswick hotel has a living roof, further demonstrating Travelodge’s commitment to sustainable design.

The company’s focus on sustainability aligns with the growing demand for eco-friendly accommodations in the travel and tourism industry. Travelodge’s investments are helping to meet this demand by integrating environmentally conscious practices into both its new builds and refurbishments.

International Growth: Expanding Travelodge’s Presence in Spain

Travelodge is also making strides in its international expansion with the acquisition of a freehold site in Madrid, where it will open a hotel in 2027. This acquisition will bring the brand’s total presence in Spain to 14 properties, with an additional 20 locations identified for future growth. In Bilbao, Travelodge has secured another freehold hotel that is set to open in early 2026.

These additions in Spain mark a significant step for Travelodge, as it continues to expand its presence outside of the UK and cater to the growing demand for budget accommodation in Europe. The new properties in Madrid and Bilbao will provide affordable and high-quality lodging options in two of Spain’s most vibrant cities.

Refitting Existing Properties for Improved Guest Experiences

Alongside its expansion efforts, Travelodge has continued to invest heavily in refitting its existing properties. During 2025, the company completed upgrades to 8,079 rooms, bringing them in line with the brand’s latest premium design standards. 47 of its restaurants were also upgraded to the 85 Bar Café specification, which includes modern designs and improved facilities to create a more enjoyable dining experience for guests.

The multi-million-pound refit programme is part of Travelodge’s commitment to improving the guest experience across its estate, ensuring that existing properties continue to offer modern, stylish, and comfortable spaces for both business and leisure travelers.

Looking Forward: Continued Expansion in the UK and Beyond

With 21 new properties already opened and additional locations in the pipeline, Travelodge is poised to continue its growth trajectory well into 2026 and beyond. The company’s sustainable development strategy, along with its commitment to providing high-quality, affordable accommodation, positions Travelodge as a leader in the UK budget hotel sector.

As Travelodge expands its footprint across the UK and into Spain, the brand’s focus on sustainability, luxury at an affordable price, and guest experience ensures that it will remain a top choice for travelers seeking value without compromising comfort. Whether travelers are visiting for business or leisure, Travelodge’s expanded network of hotels provides convenient, reliable, and affordable options in key locations across the UK and Europe.
