As the Tropicana Las Vegas casino resort approached its final hours of operation, both residents and visitors to the Las Vegas Strip took the opportunity to bid farewell to an iconic establishment that has graced the area for decades. The casino floor was set to close at 3 a.m. on a Tuesday, with the entire property shutting down by noon the same day. Reflecting on the closure, a tourist named Michael Lawhorn lamented to 8 News Now that the true value of things often only becomes apparent once they’re lost, a sentiment that resonates deeply with many who hold the Strip dear.

In a rush to experience the Tropicana before its closure, Kayden Halbert, a high school student, mentioned making a special trip with his brother for one last visit, highlighting the draw of the Tropicana’s legacy for even younger generations. The hotel lobby saw an influx of tourists and locals eager for one final look, underlining the Tropicana’s enduring appeal.

Lawhorn pointed out the challenge of securing a piece of memorabilia from the Tropicana, noting the limited options available to guests wishing to keep a token of their visit. Since its inception in 1957, the Tropicana has stood as a testament to the evolving landscape of Las Vegas, marking the end of an era with its closure.

The impending demolition of the Tropicana to make room for Las Vegas’ first Major League Baseball stadium has stirred mixed feelings among locals. Monica Fabila expressed concern over the changing face of the Strip, noting the proximity of other major sports teams and questioning the necessity of situating the new stadium in such a historic location. She advocated for alternative sites within the valley that could accommodate the stadium without altering the character of the Strip.

An official ceremony to lock the doors of the Tropicana is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, though the structure itself will remain for several more months, allowing for last-minute visits and photography. The demolition, not commencing until October, leaves a window for those wishing to pay their respects to a bygone landmark of Las Vegas entertainment.
