Chairman Jetwing, Hiran Cooray, said that many Sri Lankans are going away from the country as the government is not aimed on tourism and these people should be given confidence so that they believe in them and consider that they are committed to tourism. He said this recently while participating in the seminar Reimagining Tourism – Coming Back from the Brink.

If such a situation continues for long, then youth who had shown interest to join tourism will go somewhere else and Sri Lanka as a country would lose the people who provide excellent hospitality and that was the major issue the island’s tourism industry was experiencing at the moment. Also, the country needs to bring back the residents who are working in the Middle East and Maldives and bring back that warm smile of the Sri Lankans and amazing hospitality once again and those were some of the things that the government must pay an immediate attention, Cooray said.

The experience with PATA for more than three decades says that tourism isn’t dependent only on the tourism ministry; there are other ministries which are equally involved with tourism like defense, finance, health, transportation, environment and aviation and all of these are related to each other. He also added that all other ministries should play a role if the government is to play an energetic one to make tourism a significant contributor to the GDP.
