Abu Dhabi Stopover Programme gives visitors the opportunity to take a break from their journey and spend time in Al Ain, with fares that include flights and hotel stays. Participants of the program, which is run by the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi and Etihad Airways, provide eligible guests the opportunity to stay for free while changing planes at the Zayed International Airport. The program has welcomes over 310,000 guests since its launch in 2024.
The expansion gives passengers connecting through Zayed International Airport a broader choice of experiences during their journey. Travellers can continue to stay in Abu Dhabi city and its island districts, or they can now select Al Ain for their complimentary hotel stay.
The programme has become an increasingly important tool for converting transit passengers into short-stay visitors. During the first eight months of 2026 alone, around 60,000 travellers used the initiative.
Under the programme, eligible Etihad passengers can receive a complimentary hotel stay of one or two nights while travelling through Abu Dhabi to or from another destination in the airline’s international network. The arrangement allows travellers to divide a long journey while adding a short UAE experience without paying an additional room charge.
For Abu Dhabi’s tourism industry, the model also creates an opportunity to introduce the destination to visitors who may not otherwise have planned a dedicated trip to the emirate.
An important development for the programme has been the number of travellers who initially experienced Abu Dhabi during a stopover and later returned for a longer holiday. This repeat-visit pattern has encouraged DCT Abu Dhabi and Etihad Airways to continue developing the initiative as part of their wider strategy to increase international visitation.
Europe Leads Demand for Abu Dhabi Stopovers
European markets currently account for the strongest demand for the Abu Dhabi Stopover programme.
The United Kingdom is a leading source market, alongside Germany, France, Italy and Spain. The Americas are another significant contributor, particularly the United States and Canada.
India also ranks among the programme’s largest international source markets, highlighting the importance of Etihad’s connectivity between South Asia, Abu Dhabi and destinations across Europe, North America and other parts of its global network.
The geographical mix demonstrates how stopover tourism can benefit from long-haul connecting traffic. Instead of passengers moving directly between aircraft, the programme encourages eligible travellers to spend additional time in the UAE and explore the destination.
This can create wider economic benefits for hotels, restaurants, attractions, transport operators and tourism businesses, even when visitors remain in the emirate for only one or two nights.
Al Ain Becomes Abu Dhabi’s Second Stopover Destination
The addition of Al Ain gives the programme a new tourism dimension.
While Abu Dhabi city offers beaches, museums, entertainment districts, major attractions and island resorts, Al Ain provides an experience centred more strongly on heritage, landscapes, nature and wellness.
The expansion comes during an important year for the city. Al Ain has been designated Capital of Arab Tourism for 2026 by the Arab Ministerial Council for Tourism, increasing its visibility among regional and international travellers.
Often known as the Garden City, Al Ain is one of the UAE’s most historically important destinations. It is also closely connected with the country’s national story as the birthplace of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan.
The destination is home to a UNESCO World Heritage Site and combines historic buildings, mountain scenery, oases and cultural attractions.
By including Al Ain within the stopover programme, Abu Dhabi is effectively creating two different short-break options for transit passengers.
Visitors seeking urban entertainment, beaches and major attractions can stay in Abu Dhabi city, while travellers interested in a quieter heritage-focused experience can choose Al Ain.
Al Ain Attractions Add a Different Experience
Travellers selecting Al Ain can explore several of the destination’s best-known landmarks.
Al Ain Oasis offers visitors a look at the area’s historic agricultural landscape and traditional irrigation systems. Jebel Hafeet provides one of the emirate’s most recognisable natural settings, while Al Jahili Fort is among the city’s important heritage landmarks.
Qasr Al Muwaiji adds another historical dimension, while Al Ain Zoo remains one of the destination’s established family attractions.
Together, these sites give Al Ain a tourism identity that differs substantially from Abu Dhabi’s coastal and entertainment-led visitor offer.
This distinction is important because Al Ain is being introduced as a separate destination experience rather than simply an alternative hotel location within the existing programme.
Complimentary Hotels and Transfers Included
Eligible passengers booking their journey directly with Etihad, or through participating travel agents, can add a stopover and select from participating hotels in Al Ain.
Accommodation options include properties such as Four Points by Sheraton Al Ain, Radisson Blu Hotel & Resort Al Ain, Al Ain Rotana and Danat Al Ain Resort, among other participating hotels.
The room is provided without an additional accommodation charge under the qualifying stopover offer.
Complimentary shuttle transport between Zayed International Airport and Al Ain is also included, helping make the inland destination easier to access for passengers arriving on connecting flights.
Transport is particularly important for the expansion because Al Ain is located away from Abu Dhabi’s main international aviation gateway. Including transfers reduces one of the key practical barriers for travellers considering a short visit during a connection.
Abu Dhabi Stopover Pass Adds Attraction Savings
Etihad stopover passengers can also use the digital Abu Dhabi Stopover Pass during their visit.
The pass provides savings of up to 15 per cent at selected attractions and visitor destinations in Abu Dhabi.
Participating attractions include Qasr Al Watan, The National Aquarium and Ferrari World Yas Island Abu Dhabi.
The additional benefits are designed to encourage stopover passengers to explore beyond their hotel and spend more time at the emirate’s cultural, leisure and entertainment attractions.
For travellers staying for only one or two nights, this can help simplify the process of planning activities during a relatively short visit.
From a tourism perspective, the pass also strengthens the programme’s ability to distribute visitor spending beyond accommodation and transport.
Complimentary Medical Travel Insurance Adds Another Benefit
International stopover passengers can also benefit from complimentary medical travel insurance provided through the collaboration between Etihad Airways, DCT Abu Dhabi and The National Insurance Company – Daman.
The benefit was introduced in June 2026 and is available to eligible international visitors travelling on qualifying Etihad-operated flights.
Cover can extend for up to 15 days and is applied automatically for eligible passengers without requiring a separate insurance application.
The initiative applies to qualifying tickets through December 2026, subject to the programme’s terms and conditions.
The addition of automatic medical insurance strengthens the overall stopover package by reducing another potential concern for international travellers during their visit.
Stopover Tourism Becomes a Larger Part of Abu Dhabi’s Visitor Strategy
The continued expansion of the Abu Dhabi Stopover programme shows how aviation connectivity is increasingly being used as a tourism development tool.
Zayed International Airport acts as a major transfer point within Etihad’s global network. Every connecting passenger therefore represents a potential visitor who could spend additional time in the emirate.
By combining hotel accommodation, transport, attraction savings and travel insurance, Abu Dhabi is building a more complete short-stay tourism product around those passengers.
Adding Al Ain also spreads tourism opportunities beyond the capital’s central visitor districts and supports the promotion of a destination with a strong heritage and nature-based identity.
More than 310,000 international visitors have already used the stopover initiative since its 2024 launch. With Al Ain now joining the programme and around 60,000 passengers participating during the first eight months of 2026, the partnership between DCT Abu Dhabi and Etihad Airways is increasingly turning international connecting traffic into additional tourism demand across the emirate.
