Tunisia is geared up for a robust tourism period with visitor statistics going up to pre-pandemic standards,
said a government official. This brings some seriously desirable foreign exchange into an economy stuck in emergency with insolvency challenging state funds.

Tourism characteristically signified around 7 percent of Tunisia’s gross domestic product. However, visitor
numbers shrunk in the course of the pandemic, creating additional anxiety on an economy that was
already in distress.

Nevertheless, this year, Tunisian authorities are now supposing around 8.5 million tourists, which are 90
percent of the 9.4 million witnessed in 2019, which marks the last year prior to the pandemic. It is a great
jump from the 6.4 million seen in 2022, said Lotfi Mani an official with the Tunisian Tourism Ministry.

The official said that there are indicators for a decent tourist season, with an upsurge in the amount of
bookings. Tourism income till the end of May featured at 1.7 billion dinars ($550 million), marking a 57
percent surge compared to the similar period in 2022.

Even an excellent tourism spell would only contribute an insignificant way toward assuaging the enormous dent in Tunisia’s public funds, which has led to scarcities in certain fares and medicine, or to reinforce its general economy.
