Turkey generates $11.5bln tourism revenue in third quarter

The number of foreign arrivals led to an increase in Turkey’s tourism revenue reaching $11.5 billion in the third quarter of 2018 as announced by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK).

 

 

The tourism revenue rose by 1 percent in the third quarter of 2018 which was up from $11.4 billion in the same quarter in 2017.

 

 

A major part of the income was earned from foreign visitors. Between the period spanning July and September Turkey welcomed 18.8 million visitors showing a rise of 12.7 percent from the same period last year.

 

 

Around 84.7 percent were foreign citizens and 15.3 percent were Turkish residing abroad.The third quarter of 2018 saw average expenditure per capita at $612.

 

The average expenditure of the foreigners was $589 per capita and the average expenditure of the Turkish citizen  residents abroad was $724 per capita.

 

 

In the first nine months of the year nearly 37 million people visited Turkey with 21.4 percent yearly increase as per the data from Tourism Ministry.

 

 

Around 32 million foreign tourists visited the country with a 22 percent increase during the same period.

 

 

The ministry data revealed that the number of foreign arrivals rose 15.6 percent on a yearly basis in September coming to 5.4 million.

 

 

The Russian traveller contributed 5.12 million visitors and the country had a share of 16.1 percent in foreign arrivals.

 

 

 

Germany was second with 3.57 million arrivals and 11.2 percent share in total. The UK had 1.89 million arrivals and 5.95 percent share in total.

 

 

Bulgaria and Iran followed these countries, while the number of foreign arrivals in Turkey rose in 2016 to 25.4 million amid a diplomatic crisis with Russia.

 

 

The hotel occupancy rates across Turkey rose 0.8 percent year-on-year basis to 70.8 percent.
