Medical Tourism

As the healthcare landscape transforms globally, Turkey stands at the forefront of medical tourism, marking a significant presence. The 2023 overview of Turkey’s role in this sector illustrates a dynamic advancement, bolstered by recent statistics and firsthand accounts from patients.

Back in 2019, Turkey was recognized as a leading destination in health tourism, attracting 701,046 international visitors. Despite experiencing a decline to 407,423 visitors in 2020 due to global health challenges, the country rapidly bounced back. This resilience was demonstrated by an impressive rise to 1,258,382 visitors in 2022, culminating in an estimated 1,800,000 visitors by the end of 2023.

This notable increase in health tourism visitors not only highlights Turkey’s ability to overcome obstacles but also its appeal to those in search of top-notch medical care, innovative treatments, and the renowned Turkish hospitality.

Why Choose Turkey for Medical Procedures?

The reasons patients flock to Turkey are manifold. Approximately 63% of them are drawn by the affordability of treatments, 58% by Turkey’s allure as a travel destination, and 51% by the convenience and quickness of the journey. Other factors influencing their choice include the standard of medical facilities (33%), the expertise of the healthcare professionals (31%), the indulgence of luxury travel services (29%), the availability of advanced technology and equipment (20%), and the short waiting periods (19%).

Turkey’s medical tourism attracts a wide-ranging demographic, from European nations to the Middle East and beyond, including major sources like Germany, Russia, and the UK.

Preferred Medical Services

An analysis of treatment preferences reveals significant trends among medical tourists. Leading the demand is hair transplantation, which accounts for 50% of the procedures, followed by eye surgeries (18.1%), aesthetic operations (15.57%), and dental services (15%). Within cosmetic surgeries, facial and head procedures (43.94%), body surgeries (30.05%), and breast surgeries (26.01%) are predominant, with liposuction, nose reshaping, and breast enlargements being the top choices.

The comprehensive overview is derived from authoritative entities such as the Turkish Statistical Institute (TURKSTAT), along with contributions from premier hospitals and clinics. It also incorporates feedback from 1,384 individuals, gathered through both direct interactions and online platforms, providing a detailed and patient-focused insight into Turkey’s medical tourism scene in 2023.
