Türkiye Welcomes Millions of International Travelers, Historic Cities and Mediterranean Coast See Strong Demand

Türkiye has reinforced its status as a leading global travel destination, welcoming 47.25 million international tourists between January and October 2025. While this represents a slight 0.1% decrease compared to the same period last year, the country’s tourism sector continues to show resilience, driven by its combination of historical landmarks, cultural experiences, and natural attractions.

Istanbul remained the most popular destination, hosting 16.01 million visitors and accounting for nearly 34% of all international arrivals. The city’s enduring appeal lies in its seamless integration of rich history and modern vibrancy. Tourists are drawn to iconic sites such as Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace, and the Blue Mosque, while Istanbul’s bustling bazaars, riverfront promenades, and contemporary art spaces provide a dynamic urban experience that complements its cultural heritage.

Antalya continues to serve as Türkiye’s Mediterranean tourism hub, attracting sun-seekers and leisure travelers with its pristine beaches, luxury resorts, and wide-ranging recreational options. Edirne, located near the borders of Bulgaria and Greece, also saw strong visitor numbers. The city’s Ottoman-era architecture, historic mosques, and traditional markets make it a significant draw for cultural tourism and cross-border travelers.

Visitor demographics highlight Türkiye’s diverse international appeal. Russian tourists accounted for the largest share at 13.5%, followed by Germany and the United Kingdom. This mix demonstrates the country’s capacity to attract visitors from a wide range of European markets, as well as regional neighbors.

October 2025 proved particularly strong, with 5.68 million arrivals recorded—a 4.3% increase compared to October 2024. The month’s growth reflects Türkiye’s continued ability to attract tourists year-round, supported by seasonal events, festivals, and promotional initiatives that showcase the country’s historical, cultural, and natural offerings.

Türkiye’s tourism appeal extends far beyond its major cities. The country is home to a rich variety of attractions, from ancient ruins in Ephesus, Pergamon, and Hierapolis to UNESCO World Heritage sites such as Cappadocia, Göreme, and the city of Troy. Coastal destinations including Bodrum, Fethiye, and Marmaris remain popular for beach vacations, sailing, and water sports, while inland regions offer hiking trails, traditional villages, and authentic local cuisine. This diversity allows Türkiye to cater to a wide spectrum of traveler interests, from history buffs to adventure seekers and luxury tourists.

Infrastructure development has played a key role in supporting this growth. Improved airports, high-speed rail networks, and upgraded roadways have made travel more convenient, while new hotels, boutique resorts, and all-inclusive accommodations have expanded capacity and enhanced comfort for visitors.
