Turtle Island, located in Yilan County, is gearing up for its reopening to the public on Friday, March 1, after its annual closure from December to February for ecological restoration. This year, to manage its delicate ecosystem and promote eco-friendly tourism, the island will limit the number of daily visitors to 1,800. This initiative is part of a broader effort to preserve the island’s natural beauty and biodiversity, ensuring that it remains a vibrant and sustainable destination for future generations.

Community Efforts for Sustainability
Prior to the reopening, a beach cleanup event is scheduled for February 28, in a collaborative effort between several organizations including the Northeast and Yilan Coast National Scenic Headquarters, Coast Guard Administration, Ocean Affairs Council, Yilan County Environmental Protection Bureau, and the Toucheng Fisherman’s Association. This initiative, expected to draw over 550 volunteers, underscores the community’s commitment to environmental stewardship and the promotion of eco-tourism on Turtle Island.

Preserving Natural Beauty and Biodiversity
Turtle Island is celebrated for its rich ecological diversity and is a beloved attraction in Yilan. The island’s periodic closure plays a crucial role in its conservation strategy, allowing the local flora and fauna to thrive undisturbed, thereby enhancing the area’s biodiversity. With a controlled number of visitors, the island aims to strike a balance between welcoming tourists and maintaining its environmental integrity.

Impact on Global Tourism
The reopening of Turtle Island, with a focus on sustainability and eco-tourism serves as a model for similar destinations worldwide. By implementing measures such as visitor caps and requiring advance registration, Turtle Island demonstrates how tourism can be managed responsibly to ensure environmental preservation. This approach not only enriches the visitor experience but also contributes positively to global tourism by showcasing how destinations can welcome tourists while prioritizing ecological health and sustainability.
