The Travel Association predicts nearly two million British vacationers will venture abroad during the Easter Bank Holiday weekend from 29 March to 1 April, with the peak travel days being Good Friday and Easter Sunday.

ABTA members have noted a surge in demand for trips abroad, with the Canary Islands, mainland Spain, Portugal, Cyprus, and Turkey emerging as top destinations.

Over this Bank Holiday weekend, the UK’s preferred international holiday spots are expected to enjoy warmer temperatures and ample sunshine compared to back home. Daytime highs in these favored locales are forecasted to be as follows: Alicante at 22°C, Faro at 21°C, Lanzarote at 22°C, Palma at 21°C, and Antalya at 23°C, offering perfect conditions for beach days, historical city tours, or leisurely outdoor dining.

In contrast, the UK’s weekend weather looks less appealing, with mixed conditions of clouds, sunshine, and showers. Expected average temperatures include London and Manchester at 13°C, Belfast at 12°C, Cardiff at 13°C, and Edinburgh at 11°C.

The long weekend also presents an opportunity for city breaks, with Amsterdam, Barcelona, Prague, and Dublin favored for shorter journeys, and New York and Dubai for those travelling further.

Air travel is set to be bustling, with significant departures from major airports: Stansted expects 175,000 travelers, Luton 105,000, Manchester 160,000, Birmingham 79,000, and Edinburgh 89,000.

Additionally, other local airports, seaports, and the Channel Tunnel will see heavy traffic. Travelers are urged to consult with their transport providers for any specific journey advice.

The Easter period is also a prime time for domestic travel within the UK, with many opting for city getaways, countryside retreats, or seaside visits, and others planning day trips to explore nearby attractions.

Mark Tanzer, ABTA Chief Executive, said:

“Easter is one of the busiest times of year for the travel industry with many looking to take advantage of the long Bank Holiday weekend to take an overseas break when many destinations are at their best, with good sunshine and the spring countryside at its most lovely.

“To save unnecessary stress, we would recommend that customers leave plenty of time to get to their departure point as the roads will be busy and to check for engineering works if using public transport. If you have booked with an ABTA travel company, they will be able to provide you with the most up to date advice about what you need to know for your travels.”
