China Travel Surge Accelerates as Viking Launches Exclusive Chinese-Language Northern Europe Cruises After Mediterranean Expansion as the company responds to rising demand from Chinese travellers seeking luxury, personalised and culturally immersive international holidays. Following the successful expansion of its Chinese-language Mediterranean programme, Viking is extending its China-focused strategy into Northern Europe from 2027 with dedicated voyages designed around Chinese-speaking guests. The new cruise experiences will combine European exploration, premium onboard services and familiar cultural comforts, reflecting a major shift in outbound travel preferences among China’s affluent travellers who are increasingly choosing slower-paced journeys, deeper destination experiences and customised luxury holidays over conventional group tours.

Viking is expanding its China-focused cruise strategy by launching dedicated Chinese-language ocean cruises in Northern Europe from April 2027, creating a new travel option for Chinese passengers seeking premium experiences, cultural immersion and slower-paced international journeys. The move reflects the changing preferences of China’s affluent outbound travellers, who are increasingly moving beyond traditional sightseeing tours and looking for personalised holidays combining comfort, discovery and authentic local experiences.

The new programme will become the first Northern Europe cruise collection designed specifically for Chinese-speaking guests, highlighting the growing importance of China’s luxury travel market for global cruise operators. Viking’s expansion comes as international cruise brands increasingly develop tailored products for different regions, cultures and passenger expectations.

Viking Yidun Leads China-Focused Cruise Expansion

The centrepiece of Viking’s new Northern Europe programme will be Viking Yidun, a 930-passenger ocean vessel specially prepared to serve Chinese-speaking travellers. The ship has been adapted with services and facilities designed to provide a more familiar and comfortable environment for guests while they explore international destinations.

The vessel includes Chinese-language signage, entertainment systems, onboard assistance and shore support services. Additional features such as Chinese electrical outlets, in-room kettles and a combination of Chinese and Western cuisine have been introduced to meet passenger preferences.

The strategy reflects a broader transformation in the cruise industry, where operators are moving towards market-specific travel experiences instead of offering identical products worldwide. By combining European destinations with Chinese-language hospitality, Viking aims to deliver a luxury cruise experience that balances international exploration with familiar cultural touches.

More than 100,000 Chinese travellers have already travelled with Viking, providing the company with an established foundation as it expands its dedicated China-oriented cruise portfolio.

Mediterranean Expansion Builds Foundation Before Northern Europe Launch

Before introducing its Northern Europe cruises, Viking is strengthening its Chinese-language cruise operations in the Mediterranean market. Viking Yidun will operate its first dedicated Mediterranean season from August 2026 to March 2027, offering voyages across some of Europe’s most recognised coastal destinations.

The Mediterranean programme includes cruises ranging from eight to 22 days, covering ports across nine countries, including Italy, Spain, Greece, Türkiye, France, Monaco, Croatia, Montenegro and Slovenia.

The deployment follows Viking Yidun’s 60-day transcontinental voyage from Shanghai to Barcelona, allowing the ship to transition into its Mediterranean operations. After completing the Mediterranean season, the vessel will continue offering Chinese-language ocean journeys, including extended itineraries connecting major European regions.

One of the planned highlights will be a 60-day voyage between Athens and Stockholm, covering 18 countries and 40 cities. The itinerary demonstrates Viking’s ambition to position long-duration European exploration as a premium travel choice for Chinese guests.

Northern Europe Cruises Deliver New Cultural Experiences

The upcoming Northern Europe programme will introduce two major cruise routes focused on the region’s natural landscapes, historic cities and maritime heritage.

The first itinerary, Nordic Discovery, will connect Oslo and Stockholm through a 15-day journey featuring Nordic capitals, Norwegian fjords and historic European trading destinations. The second route will travel between Lisbon and Oslo, linking Atlantic Europe with Scandinavian destinations.

The Lisbon-to-Oslo voyage will depart on 9 April 2027 and will take passengers through Portugal, Spain, France, Belgium and Norway. The journey will include destinations such as Porto, A Coruña, Bilbao, Pauillac near Bordeaux, Le Havre, Zeebrugge, Kristiansand and Oslo.

The itinerary offers travellers a combination of coastal scenery, European history, regional cuisine and cultural attractions, creating a diverse introduction to Western Europe and Scandinavia.

Nordic Discovery Highlights Seven Countries and Twelve Destinations

Viking’s Nordic Discovery itinerary will provide Chinese-speaking passengers with an extensive exploration of Northern Europe. The standard 15-day voyage will cover seven countries, 12 destinations and 12 included shore excursions and experiences.

The journey begins with an overnight stay in Oslo before continuing through Norway’s coastal highlights, including Kristiansand, Bergen, Eidfjord and Stavanger. Guests will then travel towards Copenhagen before visiting Germany’s Warnemünde, which provides access to Berlin.

The cruise continues through Rønne on Denmark’s Bornholm island, GdaÅ„sk in Poland, KlaipÄ—da in Lithuania and Riga in Latvia, before concluding with an overnight stay in Stockholm.

The route combines natural wonders, historic landmarks and cultural discoveries, giving Chinese travellers an opportunity to experience multiple European countries through one carefully designed journey.

Viking is accelerating its China travel strategy by introducing dedicated Chinese-language Northern Europe cruises from 2027, driven by growing demand for luxury, immersive and personalised international travel experiences among Chinese travellers. The expansion follows the success of its Mediterranean programme and strengthens Europe’s appeal in China’s premium cruise market.

Extended Routes Add More European Discoveries

Viking will also introduce an extended version of the Nordic Discovery cruise, adding Gothenburg, Sweden, as an additional destination. The extended voyages will operate on selected dates in 2027 and will feature seven countries, 13 destinations and 12 included shore experiences.

Gothenburg adds another dimension to the itinerary through its industrial heritage, architecture and modern city attractions. Known internationally as the birthplace of Volvo, the Swedish city offers travellers a combination of innovation, culture and urban exploration.

The expansion highlights Viking’s long-term focus on China’s outbound tourism market. As Chinese travellers increasingly seek luxury holidays, personalised services and meaningful cultural experiences, cruise companies are adapting their products to match these changing expectations.

Viking’s Northern Europe launch represents a significant step in creating specialised international cruise experiences for Chinese passengers and strengthens Europe’s position as a key destination for China’s growing premium travel segment.
