TUI Musement has detailed how social media reshapes each phase of the contemporary travel experience from discovery to booking to the post-travel experience. Digital media has influenced how consumers find travel inspiration, make travel booking decisions, and share travel memories. TikToks and Instagram posts, among many others, have influenced most travel decisions across the world. The latest survey by TUI Musement, a tours and activities services provider, shows that more than 39% of travelers are led by social media to visit tourist destinations primarily to take and post travel photographs or videos online.

Social Media Becomes A Powerful Force In Travel Discovery

TUI Musement’s research shows that travellers are increasingly turning to digital platforms when searching for holiday inspiration and new activities. Search engines such as Google remain one of the most popular sources, with 42% of respondents using them to discover travel ideas. However, social media has become equally influential, competing with traditional recommendations from family and friends, which were cited by 41% of travellers.

The findings highlight a major change in how people find and evaluate destinations. Instead of relying only on travel brochures, personal recommendations or traditional advertising, travellers are now influenced by real-time videos, creator content and visually engaging posts shared online.

Gen Z Places TikTok At The Heart Of Travel Inspiration

TUI Musement’s study reveals a clear generational shift in travel discovery habits, with younger travellers increasingly relying on short-form video platforms. Among Gen Z travellers, TikTok has become the leading source of travel inspiration, with 48% saying they use the platform to find destination ideas and activities.

TikTok ranks ahead of recommendations from family and friends among this generation, with personal networks influencing 43% of Gen Z travellers. The trend highlights the growing impact of visual storytelling, where short videos showcasing destinations, attractions and unique experiences can quickly influence travel choices.

Viral Content Drives Real Travel Bookings Worldwide

Social media is no longer limited to inspiring travel dreams; it is also directly influencing booking decisions. According to TUI Musement’s research, more than 43% of travellers have booked a trip or activity after discovering it through a viral post or video.

The impact is strongest among younger generations. Around 52% of millennials and 50% of Gen Z travellers said viral social media content has encouraged them to book travel experiences. These figures demonstrate how online trends are increasingly converting into real tourism demand.

Travel Influencers Shape Destination Choices

The study also highlights the growing role of travel influencers in shaping where people go and what they experience. Around 43% of respondents said they follow travel creators for inspiration when deciding destinations or activities.

Influencer recommendations are also changing travel plans, with 27% of travellers saying they have switched their destination choice after seeing online recommendations. This shows that creators and digital communities are becoming important voices in the global tourism industry.

Instagram Famous Locations Continue To Attract Visitors

TUI Musement’s research further shows that social media popularity can influence visitor behaviour. Around 37% of travellers said they sometimes prefer visiting Instagram-famous locations rather than choosing lesser-known destinations.

The findings underline the growing importance of online visibility in tourism. A single viral photo, video or recommendation can increase awareness of a destination, attract new visitors and create global interest in specific attractions.

As travellers continue to prioritise unique, memorable and shareable experiences, social media is becoming an essential part of the travel ecosystem. Destinations, attractions and tourism businesses are increasingly focusing on experiences that create strong emotional connections both offline and online.

“A single image or video can now inspire travel, and we have steadily increased our focus on how we can best reach and engage our audience through platforms such as Instagram and TikTok. However, ultimately, what matters most is the holiday itself and at TUI Musement, we help people go beyond the viral moment to connect with the heart of a destination through authentic, expertly curated experiences,” says Mirco Fiumene, Managing Director Experiences & CMO TUI Musement.

The Growing Pressure To Create The “Perfect” Travel Story Online

Social media has become an important part of the travel experience, influencing not only what destinations people visit but also the activities they choose and the moments they prioritise. According to the study, 39% of travellers have visited a tourist attraction mainly to capture photos or videos for sharing online. Meanwhile, 73% of respondents said they share their holiday experiences on social media at least occasionally, although 26% prefer keeping their travel memories limited to a smaller circle of friends and family.

However, the demand to create impressive online content is also creating new pressure among travellers. Around 37% of respondents said they feel the need to make their trips appear exciting on social media platforms. This pressure is even stronger among Gen Z travellers, with 45% admitting they feel the same expectation.

The influence of social media is also changing how travellers view their companions. For 18% of respondents, a strong obsession with taking photos and constantly creating social media content can be seen as a warning sign when choosing someone to travel with.

The findings highlight how social media has reshaped the entire travel journey, from discovering destinations to documenting experiences. While digital platforms continue to influence travel choices, authentic connections with destinations remain centred around the activities, tours and personal experiences travellers enjoy during their journeys.
