Uganda, GSTC

Uganda, nestled in the heart of East Africa, is a country without access to the sea, celebrated for its rich tapestry of geographical wonders and a melting pot of cultures. Its terrain is a majestic mix, from the towering Rwenzori Mountains, adorned with snow, to the vast expanses of Lake Victoria, Africa’s largest body of freshwater. The nation’s capital, Kampala, blends bustling city life with the serene beauty of rolling hills and Lake Victoria’s tranquil shores.

This nation is a vibrant mosaic of ethnicities and customs, drawing from the influences of its neighbors and its own historical roots. This rich cultural fusion is evident in Uganda’s diverse culinary flavors, musical rhythms, and artisanal crafts, showcasing the nation’s rich heritage and cultural depth.

Sustainability Initiatives in Uganda
In its stride towards sustainable growth, Uganda has aligned itself with the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC), embracing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) outlined in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development since 2015. The establishment of a dedicated SDG Secretariat underlines Uganda’s commitment to structured and inclusive development strategies, aiming to bolster progress towards the SDGs.

Uganda’s journey towards a sustainable future is marked by its integration of eco-friendly initiatives into the National Development Plan III (NDP III), aiming for a harmonious blend of economic advancement and environmental stewardship. This plan is a key component of a broader vision that includes six NDPs, propelling Uganda towards the realization of the Uganda Vision 2040. This vision seeks to transform the nation from a primarily agrarian society to a modern, prosperous one within three decades.

Uganda’s dedication to sustainability extends beyond its borders, engaging with regional strategies like the African Union Agenda 2063, the East African Community (EAC) Vision 2050, the Common Market for East and Southern Africa (COMESA), and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

Uganda Tourism Board CEO, Lilly Ajarova expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, saying that “Joining the Global Sustainable Tourism Council underscores Uganda’s dedication to fostering sustainable tourism development. Uganda will actively engage in initiatives to promote sustainability standards, share best practices, and collaborate with stakeholders to advance sustainable tourism development in the region. This collaboration aligns with our vision of promoting responsible travel practices while preserving our natural and cultural heritage for generations to come.”

GSTC Welcomes Uganda Tourism Board

“Uganda’s decision to join the GSTC is a significant step forward in promoting sustainable tourism practices. We value the commitment of the Uganda Tourism Board in supporting our mission. We look forward to working with them to advance sustainable tourism practices in Uganda and beyond,” says Randy Durband, CEO of GSTC.

The GSTC promotes the adoption of sustainable practices in tourism by encouraging destinations to become members and adhere to the GSTC Destination Criteria, paving the way for certification by a GSTC-Accredited Certification Body, further endorsing Uganda’s commitment to sustainable tourism and development practices.
