Tourism in Croatia is increasingly adopting a more balanced approach, with a focus on the development of nature-oriented tourism in the mountains and year-round activities in addition to traditional coastal regions well-known abroad. The national Sustainable Tourism Development Strategy to 2030 recognises the seasonality and unevenness of distribution of tourist traffic, pressure on the environment and regional imbalance as the key issues to be solved, making year-round and regionally balanced tourism one of the four strategic priorities of the Strategy. Such an approach allows mountain areas like Velebit to gain relevance as a tourism destination. Instead of being focused on coastal cities and key sights, hiking trails and natural reservations may spread travel to inland areas.

Velebit Offers a Different Side of Croatia

The Velebit Mountains stretch for around 145 kilometres along the Adriatic and form one of Croatia’s most distinctive karst landscapes. UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere programme recognises the Velebit Mountains as a biosphere reserve covering more than 203,000 hectares, with habitats ranging from coastal karst and Mediterranean vegetation to forests, subalpine meadows and mountain ecosystems.

This geographic diversity creates a powerful foundation for hiking and nature tourism. The mountain range separates the Adriatic coast from the Lika interior, allowing visitors to experience dramatic limestone terrain, forested slopes, elevated viewpoints and secluded valleys within a single destination.

For tourism planners, the appeal extends beyond individual attractions. Longer stays built around trekking, wildlife observation, landscape photography and outdoor exploration can encourage visitors to spend more time in inland communities rather than treating Croatia exclusively as a coastal holiday destination.

Premužić Trail Remains the Signature Mountain Route

At the heart of Velebit’s hiking offer is the Premužić Trail, one of Croatia’s most celebrated long-distance mountain paths. The route was constructed between 1930 and 1933 and stretches for 57 kilometres between Oltari and Baške Oštarije. Built using traditional dry-stone techniques, it was designed by forestry engineer and mountaineer Ante Premužić to provide access through some of the most rugged terrain of northern and central Velebit.

The trail’s engineering is particularly significant because it allows hikers to cross challenging karst terrain without the severe climbs that characterise many mountain routes. The Croatian protected-area network describes it as a masterpiece of trail construction, while the entire route has been protected as cultural heritage of national importance since 2009.

Around 16 kilometres of the trail pass through Northern Velebit National Park. Along this section, hikers encounter the Rožanski and Hajdučki Kukovi area, where limestone formations, forests, grasslands and exposed mountain terrain create an unusually varied walking environment.

Northern Velebit Combines Hiking With Protected Nature

Northern Velebit National Park gives the trail experience a stronger conservation dimension. The park’s hiking infrastructure provides access to the mountain’s peaks and protected landscapes while keeping much of the visitor experience centred on walking.

Rossijeva Koliba, a mountain shelter near the Premužić Trail, is one of the recognised stopping points for hikers travelling through the park. The park authorities also identify the route as suitable for individual and group visits during the principal hiking season, generally from May through November depending on weather and trail conditions.

This creates opportunities for multi-stage hiking itineraries connecting mountain shelters, lodges and surrounding settlements. It also supports a slower form of tourism in which the journey through the landscape becomes the central experience rather than simply transportation between attractions.

Sustainable Tourism Gains a Mountain Dimension

Croatia’s sustainable tourism framework explicitly seeks to reduce overloading of destinations, address seasonality and protect natural resources while improving the quality of tourism for local communities. The Ministry of Tourism and Sport’s latest implementation report, published in April 2026, shows that the national sustainable tourism plan remains an active policy framework.

Velebit fits naturally into that direction. Its protected landscapes provide opportunities to diversify Croatia’s tourism geography while encouraging outdoor activities that can operate beyond the traditional summer beach season.

The mountain’s combination of cultural heritage, protected biodiversity and established hiking infrastructure also gives Croatia an asset that does not depend on large-scale coastal development. The Premužić Trail demonstrates how historic infrastructure can itself become a sustainable tourism attraction.
