Tourists recently visiting Bangor, a cathedral city in Gwynedd, have given it harsh reviews, labeling it as “dreary” and “neglected.”

A seaside city in North Wales, Bangor, has earned the unenviable title of the UK’s worst. In a comprehensive survey by Which? Travel, the cathedral city received negative feedback from visitors, with many describing it as “dreary” and “neglected.” Often dubbed a “seaside town,” Bangor was rated the lowest in the UK, scoring poorly alongside Mablethorpe in Lincolnshire and Burnham-on-Sea in Somerset. With a dismal 42% rating overall, Bangor was particularly criticized for its food and drink, tourist attractions, and shopping, all of which received a mere one-star rating. The city’s value for money and beach quality also earned just two stars.

However, the cathedral, pier, and surrounding scenery were highlighted in the survey. Visitors noted Bangor’s appeal as an ideal base for exploring the stunning natural landscapes of North Wales, including the Eryri National Park (Snowdonia).

Despite the overall negative feedback, some visitors found Bangor’s surroundings and heritage to be noteworthy, with the city’s status as a gateway to local outdoor adventures receiving praise. Similar sentiments were echoed in TripAdvisor reviews, reflecting the results of the survey.

Meanwhile, Mablethorpe, located on England’s east coast, ranked just above Bangor, with a score of 46%. The town received poor marks for its food and drink, attractions, and shopping, but managed to earn three stars for its beaches and parking. Mablethorpe’s affordable hotel rates, averaging £86 per night, kept it from being ranked last.

Burnham-on-Sea, located southwest of Bristol, also received criticism for its lackluster tourist attractions and facilities. With two stars for its pier and seafront, the town’s average hotel price of £106 per night added to its poor reputation in the survey.
