Unakoti to get facilities for tourists

Unakoti, popular for its very old ‘Shaivite rock’ figurines in the northern zone of Tripura, will be shortly having drinking water facilities, cafeteria, toilets along with amenities for tourists, stated a senior tourism division official.


Unakoti, also known as the ‘Angkor Wat of the North- East’ expanse, has been nominated as a UNESCO World Heritage site.


The Director of Tourism Tapan Kumar Das said that in the course of a current meeting, Sushanta Chowdhury, the Tourism Minister urged the ASI to create a cafeteria at Unakoti for facilitating the requirements of the travelers and pilgrims.


The Archeological Survey of India (ASI) is the overseer of the Unakoti rock figurines shaped in the 8th-9th
centuries on Raghunandan hills, located around 180 kms from Agartala, the capital of Tripura.


The ASI has ascertained that measures would be taken for opening the cafeteria by September 15. Also, they would make sure that other facilities, i.e. hygienic drinking water and urinals would come up. Currently, only basic amenities are present at the place. Das said that the tourism division is working on arrangement growth involving Unakoti archaeological site.

The Union Ministry of Culture has authorized Rs. 70 crore for improving the Unakoti site. The Asian
Development Bank (ADB) is also predictable to approve a loan of Rs. 70 crore for creating tourism-connected groundwork at the site.
