As air travel between China and the US continues to fall short of pre-pandemic levels, US airlines are seeking new opportunities to maximize the profitability of their widebody aircraft during the winter season. This year, widebody capacity between the US and New Zealand has surged, intensifying competition for seats and driving down both fares and airline profits.

Reintroducing a Popular Seasonal Route
Not deterred by these market shifts, United Airlines has reinstated its seasonal service between San Francisco and Christchurch, New Zealand’s largest city on the South Island. After a successful debut during last year’s southern summer, the route made its return last week. United’s flight UA730 departed San Francisco International Airport (SFO) at 00:14 on Thursday, arriving at Christchurch International Airport (CHC) at 10:24 on Friday, December 6, 2024, following a 13-hour and 10-minute flight.

This service is operated using a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, registration N28912, which was first introduced in 2014. The Dreamliner, featuring the “Kiwi Cruiser” and the iconic New Zealand Fern on its fuselage, returned from Christchurch at 14:30 and landed in San Francisco at 05:51.

The route will operate three times a week and is the only nonstop connection between the South Island of New Zealand and the United States, making it a vital link for travelers from both regions.

The resumption of this service highlights the substantial investment and research airlines put into route selection. Christchurch Airport attributes the route’s return to the combined efforts of United Airlines and Air New Zealand, part of their joint venture.
