Today, United Airlines revealed plans to install upgraded, spacious overhead bins on its Skywest operated Embraer E175 fleet, aimed at providing passengers with more storage room for their roll aboard carry-on luggage. These enhanced bins will debut on 50 aircraft featuring a 76-seat configuration by year’s end, with potential expansion to over 150 aircraft by 2026.

Pioneering this initiative, United Airlines aims to revolutionize the travel experience by significantly reducing the instances of passengers needing to gate-check bags on more than 150,000 E175 flights annually, potentially benefiting around one million travelers.

By introducing these larger overhead bins, United seeks to elevate customer satisfaction and operational efficiency. The upgraded bins will accommodate approximately 29 additional carry-on bags per regional jet, marking an impressive 80% increase in available space.

“Customer sentiment for the new overhead bins and signature interiors has been extremely positive. By helping to eliminate the need to gate check bags, we are seeing an increase in gate and boarding satisfaction,” said Linda Jojo, United’s chief customer officer. “This is just the latest way we’re working to create an industry-leading experience for all our customers – whether they’re on an international or regional flight.”

United Airlines has now equipped over 200 mainline aircraft with spacious bins capable of accommodating all passengers’ carry-on luggage, with ongoing efforts to retrofit its domestic narrowbody fleet. This enhancement extends to the regional fleet, ensuring a seamless connecting experience for travelers. Additionally, each E175 aircraft featuring these upgraded bins will include braille and tactile placards, contributing to United’s broader accessibility initiative announced in 2023.

With an extensive network spanning over 350 airports across 6 continents, United Airlines and United Express collectively operate an average of more than 4,000 daily flights. As the world’s largest E175 operator, SkyWest facilitates over 700 departures daily to over 140 destinations under the United Express banner. Notably, in 2023, United Airlines claimed the title of the world’s largest carrier by seat-miles, serving over 150 million passengers.
