Germany’s aviation landscape is set to be strengthened by the arrival of Lufthansa’s first Airbus A350-1000, which has been painted in a bold Lufthansa centenary livery at the Airbus plant in Toulouse. The aircraft has been registered as D-AIFA and will be named Deutschland. Its transfer to Munich has been scheduled for autumn 2026, after test flights, cabin work and final acceptance procedures have been completed.

Munich Is Being Prepared for Lufthansa’s New Long-Haul Flagship

The aircraft has not yet been formally delivered to Lufthansa or placed into passenger service. It has been painted and revealed at Airbus in Toulouse, but several important steps are still required. Test flights must be conducted. Further cabin work must be completed. A final acceptance inspection must then be passed before the wide-body aircraft can be transferred to Munich.

Its arrival in Bavaria will carry strategic importance. Munich has long been used as a major Lufthansa long-haul hub, and another modern aircraft type will now be introduced into its operations. Greater capacity will be provided for busy international services, while a new four-class passenger product will be offered. However, the first commercial routes and an exact entry-into-service date were not identified in the official announcement.

The wording surrounding the aircraft’s arrival must therefore be understood carefully. Its painted appearance at Toulouse represents a major production milestone, but its operational arrival in Munich will take place later in 2026.

Deutschland Name Will Be Carried Across the World

The registration D-AIFA has been assigned to Lufthansa’s first Airbus A350-1000. The name Deutschland will be carried by the aircraft, linking the new jet directly with Germany. An official naming ceremony has been planned for a later date, although its schedule and location have not yet been announced.

Through this name, a highly visible national identity will be carried across Lufthansa’s future intercontinental network. The aircraft will not merely be used as transport. A symbolic role will also be performed during the airline’s centenary year. Every airport appearance will allow the anniversary design, German name and Lufthansa crane to be seen by passengers and aviation enthusiasts.

A bridge between Lufthansa’s history and its future fleet has therefore been created. A traditional airline symbol has been placed on one of the newest large passenger aircraft available. At the same time, a more modern long-haul experience is expected to be delivered to travellers.

A Seven-Aircraft Centenary Fleet Has Been Created

The Airbus A350-1000 has become the seventh Lufthansa aircraft to receive the special anniversary design. An Airbus A350-900, an Airbus A380, a Boeing 787-9 and a Boeing 747-8 have already been placed in long-haul service with this livery. Two Airbus A320neo aircraft have also been decorated for short and medium-haul operations.

Through this combination, the anniversary branding has been spread across several parts of Lufthansa’s network. It can be seen on regional European journeys as well as long intercontinental flights. Different generations and sizes of aircraft have been brought together under one visual identity.

The A350-1000 will complete this group as Lufthansa’s newest large long-haul type. Significant attention is expected to be generated wherever D-AIFA is operated. Interest has already been attracted by the other anniversary aircraft among passengers and plane spotters. That visibility is likely to be increased when the longer A350 variant begins flying.

The Aircraft Marks a Major Airbus Delivery Milestone

D-AIFA will not only become Lufthansa’s first A350-1000. It will also become the 700th Airbus aircraft delivered to the Lufthansa Group. Two major milestones will therefore be combined in one delivery.

The relationship between Airbus and Lufthansa Group has been built over several decades and across numerous aircraft families. Short-haul, medium-haul and long-haul Airbus jets have been operated by airlines within the group. The 700th delivery will show the scale of that relationship and the continuing role being assigned to Airbus aircraft.

The milestone will also be reached during Lufthansa’s 100th-anniversary year. Its timing gives D-AIFA additional historical value. A new aircraft type, a major delivery number and a centenary livery will all be represented by the same jet.

The Special Livery Will Become a Powerful Travel Symbol

The first Lufthansa Airbus A350-1000 will be presented to travellers as more than a fleet addition. It will be used to display one hundred years of airline history while introducing a new stage in the company’s long-haul development.

Its blue fuselage and giant white crane will make it easily recognisable at airports. Its Deutschland name will create a direct connection with Germany. Its four-class cabin will also allow different groups of international passengers to be carried between Munich and future long-haul destinations.

The aircraft’s next steps will remain important. Test flights, interior completion and final acceptance must still be carried out in Toulouse. After those procedures have been completed, the aircraft is scheduled to be transferred to Munich in autumn 2026. Only then can its passenger-service chapter be opened.
