Uruguay air connectivity soars with new flights, linking Montevideo to 16 global cities and boosting tourism and trade through key air routes.
Uruguay’s air travel network is swiftly expanding, fueled by an increase in flights to and from its capital, Montevideo. Recently, the inauguration of Sky Airline’s services has enhanced Montevideo’s reach, linking it to 16 cities across the Americas and Europe.
This Chilean budget airline has initiated its Uruguayan operations, marking its entry into its ninth market, with direct flights to four South American destinations: Lima, Santiago, Florianópolis, and Salvador.
Sky Airline aims to ferry 100,000 passengers in its first year on the Montevideo-Santiago route.
Montevideo: A Hub of Connectivity
Moreover, as of January 2, Montevideo welcomed a new route to Bariloche, Argentina, operated by Aerolíneas Argentinas.
Adding to these developments, since October 2023, Montevideo has reinstated a vital link for tourism and trade: a direct flight to Miami by American Airlines.
Additionally, in November, Azul airlines launched its first flight from Montevideo to Curitiba, establishing a direct link with this dynamic southern Brazilian city.
Presently, Montevideo boasts direct flights to 16 cities, including Madrid, Panama City, Asunción, Santiago, Lima, São Paulo, Buenos Aires, Bogotá, Porto Alegre, Recife, Rio de Janeiro, Curitiba, Miami, Bariloche, Salvador, and Florianópolis.
Sky Airline and Uruguay’s Air Traffic Growth
Uruguay’s two primary airports, Carrasco International Airport and Laguna del Sauce International Airport (serving Punta del Este), saw an increase of 24 frequencies in 2023 over the previous year.
The Uruguayan Ministry of Tourism reports that from December 2022 to December 2023, weekly flight frequencies at Carrasco International Airport grew from 132 to 149.
Meanwhile, Laguna del Sauce International Airport experienced an increase in frequencies from 23 to 30 during the same period.
