On Sunday at approximately 1:36 p.m., the Big Island experienced an earthquake measuring around 4.4 magnitude. The quake took place within the summit area of the Kīlauea volcano, as reported by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.

While there is currently no tsunami threat, several areas did feel the effects of the tremor. As is typical with earthquakes, the possibility of aftershocks should be kept in mind.

Hawai’i County Civil Defense emphasized that those residing in regions where the earthquake was notably felt should take precautionary measures to inspect for any potential damages. This includes thorough checks for structural harm, as well as assessing the integrity of utility connections for gas, water, and electricity.

Though the quake’s impact wasn’t negligible, residents are advised to remain vigilant due to the potential for subsequent tremors. As the region copes with the aftermath of this seismic event, it is important to prioritize safety and respond promptly to any discovered damages or hazards.
