Loves Park has embarked on a fresh collaboration with the Rockford Park District, aiming to elevate sports tourism and attract a multitude of athletes and spectators to the area. This partnership, funded by a portion of the city’s hotel taxes, envisages an annual contribution of up to $250,000 for the years 2023 and 2025 to the Park District.

The financial strategy includes allocating 80% of the initial quarter-million dollars received from hotel taxes, followed by 50% of the subsequent $100,000, until the maximum limit is reached.

The initiative is poised to significantly impact tourism in Loves Park, enhancing its reputation as a destination for sports enthusiasts. From the outset, the partnership is designed to increase accessibility to premier sports facilities and events, thereby drawing larger crowds and benefiting the local economy.

The agreement represents a strategic investment in the city’s tourism and sports infrastructure, promising to yield dividends in terms of increased visitor numbers, greater economic activity, and heightened awareness of Loves Park as a prime location for sports tourism, from the initial stages of planning through to the realisation of the project’s full potential.

The agreement, which received unanimous approval from City Council members with an 8-0 vote, sees the Park District deploying these funds to organise and promote tournaments that are anticipated to bring overnight visitors to the city.

Notably, First Ward Alderman Dan Jacobson abstained due to his employment with the Park District, and Alderman Clint Little was absent during the vote. This new deal marks an increase from a prior arrangement, which capped annual contributions at $200,000.

Loves Park boasts significant sports tourism sites like Mercyhealth Sportscore Two and the Indoor Sports Center, which are pivotal in hosting numerous tournaments and events. Last year alone, these venues hosted 33 tournaments and 20 additional events, drawing substantial crowds and generating significant business for local hospitality and retail sectors.

The city’s Mayor, Greg Jury, highlighted the Park District’s role in driving thousands to Loves Park, benefiting the local economy, especially the hospitality industry.

The Park District’s recent initiatives in Loves Park include the enhancement of Shorewood Park, along with improvements to Wantz Park, Wentland Sports Complex, and Mercyhealth Sportscore Two, underscoring the commitment to sports tourism and community development.

This strategic move to partner with the Rockford Park District follows Loves Park’s decision to conclude its agreement with the Rockford Area Convention & Visitors Bureau in September 2020. The city sought greater oversight on tourism expenditure within its jurisdiction, leading to this new direction in promoting sports tourism.

John Groh, president and CEO of the visitors bureau, expressed optimism for future collaborations with Loves Park, emphasizing the mutual benefits of sports tourism for the region. The bureau continues to work with both the Park District and the city on various events, demonstrating the collective effort to boost the local economy through sports tourism.
