Ver.di, the trade union representing airport security checkpoint employees, has announced another strike scheduled for Thursday, March 7, 2024, affecting operations at Hamburg Airport. The main security checkpoint will remain closed throughout the day due to the strike, resulting in the cancellation of all 141 departures or flights operating without passengers. Arrivals on Thursday are still possible but may experience cancellations and significant delays due to the strike action.

Passengers impacted by cancellations are advised to contact their respective airlines and refrain from heading to the airport. Airlines and tour operators have established hotlines to address inquiries regarding cancellations and rebooking options. No departures will occur from Hamburg Airport on Thursday, as airlines are currently adjusting their flight schedules in response to the strike. Delays in updating the airline information and flight schedules are anticipated.

Originally, Hamburg Airport had scheduled 284 flights (141 departures and 143 arrivals) accommodating approximately 36,000 passengers for Thursday, March 7, 2024. To manage the cancelled flights, a considerable number of rebookings are expected for Friday, March 8, 2024, and the subsequent days. The airlines had originally scheduled 139 departures and 138 arrivals at Hamburg Airport for Tuesday, anticipating high levels of utilization.

Statement Hamburg Airport

Philipp Wolf, deputy press spokesman at Hamburg Airport:

“This new ver.di strike is unfair because it is hitting uninvolved people with full force – especially thousands of travelers, many of whom have been saving up for their vacations for a long time or who have had to switch to flights because of the rail strike taking place at the same time. However, others who have nothing to do with this wage dispute are also suffering from the strike: These are the many service providers here at the site, such as the cab drivers, or even the airport itself – none of us are at the negotiating table. “
