Vivian Kern wins 2024 State art contest, headlines governor address

Governor Gretchen Whitmer has revealed the victor of the 2024 State of the State art competition to be Vivian Kern from Bay City Central High School. Vivian’s artwork, chosen through the contest, will be featured in the 2024 State of the State program, and she will be presented with a gift box from Cherry Republic.

Governor Whitmer praised Vivian’s piece, highlighting its representation of Michigan’s essence and the diverse talent found across the state. Expressing enthusiasm about incorporating Vivian’s art into the State of the State address, the governor emphasized the importance of sharing Michigan’s narrative and implementing impactful initiatives. Governor Whitmer conveyed gratitude to Vivian and wished her enjoyment of the Cherry Republic treats.

The statewide art contest invited K-12 students to unleash their creativity by designing the cover for the 2024 State of the State program under the theme, “A Classic Michigan Story.” Students were encouraged to explore various mediums such as crayons, markers, paints, or any other artistic materials.

During the upcoming 2024 State of the State address, Governor Whitmer will outline her plans to build upon the historic achievements of the first Democratic-led legislature in four decades. Her proposals aim to reduce costs, sustain substantial investments in education from preschool to college, enhance access to secure and affordable housing for Michigan families, safeguard seniors, stimulate the state’s economy, and more.

The 2024 State of the State address is scheduled for Wednesday, January 24, at 7:00 PM, taking place in the Michigan House Chambers and broadcasted live throughout the state.
