The 41st annual Veterinary Meeting and Expo (VMX 2024), organized by the North American Veterinary Community (NAVC), concluded on January 17, marking the beginning of the new year with the latest advancements in the animal health care industry. The event, attended by over 27,000 individuals from 82 countries, featured more than 8,700 first-time attendees, contributing to a local economic impact exceeding $65.3 million.

Throughout the five-day conference, veterinary professionals were exposed to cutting-edge technologies and breakthroughs in research, particularly in the realm of artificial intelligence (AI). These innovations aim to enhance the efficiency of veterinary practices and elevate the quality of care provided to patients. Notable highlights included discussions on a new bacterial component associated with a widespread “mystery dog illness,” advancements in medications tailored for cats and dogs with improved outcomes and fewer side effects, and the introduction of a new oral drug class for managing feline diabetes.

The theme of the event, “Show of Shows,” celebrated innovation, excitement, and the sharing of cultural traditions, featuring a World’s Fair-style atmosphere with a carousel, games, and a captivating drone show illuminating the night sky with various animals. Celebrity appearances by Dan Levy, Terri and Robert Irwin, and Tyler Hubbard added to the trade show’s allure.

NAVC CEO Gene O’Neill emphasized the significance of VMX 2024, describing it as a comprehensive showcase of education, technology, and transformative products in veterinary medicine. The event provided invaluable networking opportunities and entertainment while enabling professionals to stay ahead in their continuing education requirements.

Chief Veterinary Officer Dana Varble highlighted the evolution of AI technology, emphasizing its transition from theory to undeniable reality. The event showcased medications specifically designed for different animal species, demonstrating a tangible impact on the lives of pets and their owners.

VMX 2024, organized by NAVC, serves as a global leader in continuing education for veterinary professionals. The in-person event offered over 1,300 hours of continuing education, while the virtual component included more than 245 sessions and over 200 on-demand sessions. Topics spanned various disciplines and species, catering to the diverse interests of professionals working with animals ranging from pythons and bearded dragons to otters and sea turtles.

Key highlights of VMX 2024 included a record-setting Expo Hall with 720 exhibit booths, showcasing life-changing innovations and a New Product Gallery featuring 29 revolutionary products. The event also featured the VMX Startup Circle, providing a platform for breakthrough companies to showcase their latest technologies.

AI technologies took center stage, expediting diagnostic processes and delivering more detailed results faster than ever. Exhibitors demonstrated AI applications in veterinary radiology, providing rapid and accurate assessments for X-rays. Other technological advancements focused on assessing animal pain, reducing administrative time through AI-generated medical records, and introducing breakthroughs in feline diabetes treatments.

The conference covered a wide range of topics, including advancements in pain management for osteoarthritis in dogs and the unveiling of FDA-approved drugs offering alternatives to insulin injections for diabetic cats. Researchers also shared findings related to the “Mystery Dog Illness,” shedding light on a new bacterial component and potential treatments.

Experts in various disciplines shared best practices for both traditional pets and exotic species. Sustainability measures were incorporated throughout the conference, with a dedicated sustainability hub in the Expo Hall and initiatives like waste sorting stations and a sustainability pledge tree.

Special events included the second-annual “Believe & Belong in Veterinary Medicine” event, hosting middle school students from underrepresented communities for immersive learning. The NAVC Annual Awards Night recognized Pet Peace of Mind with the NAVC Gives Marquee Award, highlighting their efforts in enabling individuals in hospice to keep their pets with them.

Notable attractions included therapy horse Magic the Mini Horse, the Puppy Playground, and CatNap Café showcasing local pets available for adoption, and a drone show sponsored by Hill’s Pet Nutrition, lighting up the Orlando sky with dogs, cats, horses, cows, and more.
