Mexico City International Airport announced that a significant number of flights, including both domestic and international routes, have been canceled. The decision to cancel 22 flights was made to allow for thorough safety inspections after several aircraft encountered volcanic ash while en route to the capital. Despite these disruptions, the airport confirmed through a statement on X that it remains operational.

The airport has disclosed that specialized teams, along with the management, are vigilantly monitoring the situation and continuously evaluating the conditions related to the ash. It was reported that the volcanic ash cloud, originating from the Popocatepetl volcano, is currently moving toward the Gulf of Mexico.

Passengers were urged by the airport to keep themselves updated on their flight status through communications from their respective airlines and through official channels provided by the airport.

In response to the volcanic activity, the government has activated a “yellow alert.” This alert level signifies noteworthy activity from the Popocatepetl volcano, which is traditionally known by its Aztec Nahuatl name, meaning “Smoking Mountain.”

Earlier on the same day, authorities had reported observing a smoke column emanating from the volcano. This smoke was drifting in a north-northwest direction, leading to concerns that volcanic ash could spread over the capital area.

The cancellation of flights due to the volcanic ash not only underscores the importance of safety measures in aviation but also highlights the potential impact on airline tourism. Such events can lead to significant disruptions in travel plans, affecting both domestic and international travelers.

The proactive measures taken by Mexico City International Airport, including the issuance of alerts and the cancellation of flights for safety checks, demonstrate a commitment to passenger safety and the mitigation of risks associated with volcanic ash. These actions, while causing temporary inconveniences, are essential for ensuring that airline tourism can continue to operate safely and effectively in regions prone to volcanic activity.
