Tamil Nadu Railway Network Receives Major Upgrade As Arakkonam-Renigunta Expansion Project Gets Approval

The construction of the third and fourth railway lines between Arakkonam and Renigunta has been approved by the authorities. This will greatly improve the railway infrastructure of Tamil Nadu and is expected to increase the capacity of the rail line between Mumbai and Chennai. As part of this project, about 77 kilometers of the rail corridor will be expanded to have two additional tracks. This will no doubt improve rail services and reduce delays. The project will also provide new electric and communication infrastructure for the corridor.

Indian Railways has approved a major infrastructure upgrade on the Arakkonam-Renigunta railway section in Tamil Nadu with the construction of third and fourth lines along the 77-kilometre route. The project, valued at ₹1,936.46 crore, is set to increase railway capacity and improve train operations on one of the busiest high-density corridors in southern India.

The expansion will add two additional tracks to the existing railway section, strengthening connectivity on the Mumbai-Chennai high-density network. The project is expected to ease congestion, improve train movement and create greater operational flexibility for passenger and freight services.

Arakkonam-Renigunta Route Set For Four-Line Railway Upgrade

The Arakkonam-Renigunta section will undergo a major transformation with the addition of two new railway lines. Once completed, the expanded corridor will provide increased capacity for handling growing rail traffic across Tamil Nadu and neighbouring regions.

The project includes extensive infrastructure development, with plans for 12 major bridges and 221 minor bridges along the route. These structures will support the additional railway tracks and ensure smooth movement of trains after the expansion becomes operational.

₹1,936 Crore Investment To Improve Railway Infrastructure

The approved cost of the Arakkonam-Renigunta expansion stands at ₹1,936.46 crore, covering track construction, civil works and railway system upgrades.

A major share of the investment, around ₹1,504.42 crore, has been allocated for civil construction activities. These works will include infrastructure required for laying additional tracks and developing supporting railway facilities.

Another ₹225.58 crore has been earmarked for electrical and traction-related improvements. These upgrades will support efficient train operations and ensure the expanded corridor meets future transportation requirements.

Strategic Project Under Major Multitracking Railway Programme

The Arakkonam-Renigunta third and fourth line project is part of a wider railway expansion programme involving five major multitracking initiatives.

Together, these projects represent an estimated investment of ₹10,021 crore and cover nearly 540 kilometres of railway routes. The developments will pass through 17 districts spread across Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Karnataka.

The large-scale programme aims to improve railway capacity, eliminate route limitations and strengthen connectivity across important regions. The projects are expected to be completed by 2029-30, creating a stronger network for future passenger and freight demand.
