West Bengal is poised to witness a significant transformation in its tourism sector, with investment proposals amounting to nearly INR 5,600 crore(644.6 USD million) secured during a high-profile business summit held recently in the state. As part of its ambitious tourism expansion plan, the state government has outlined a roadmap for the 2025-26 fiscal year, which includes the initiation of 70 tourism-related projects. A substantial portion of these, 38 projects, will be undertaken in South Bengal, a region known for its rich cultural heritage, historical landmarks, and natural beauty. The proposed investments and projects are expected to create new opportunities in hospitality, travel infrastructure, and allied industries, ultimately boosting employment and regional economic growth.

In an exclusive discussion with ETHospitalityWorld, the Home and Tourism Department of the Government of West Bengal shared further insights into the state’s hospitality sector expansion. The department confirmed that over the next two years, West Bengal will witness the establishment of approximately 40 new luxury hotels to cater to the growing demand for premium accommodations. These luxury properties will be strategically spread across various locations, offering world-class facilities to tourists and business travelers alike.

Out of the total proposed luxury hotels, at least 10 are set to be developed in Siliguri, a crucial urban hub recognized as the gateway to India’s northeastern states. Siliguri’s geographical importance, coupled with its role as a transit point for travelers heading to popular destinations such as Darjeeling, Sikkim, Assam, and Meghalaya, makes it an ideal location for high-end hospitality ventures. The government aims to leverage this potential to enhance tourism experiences while also generating employment and fostering economic development in the region.

With a combined investment of INR 5,770 crore in the luxury hospitality sector alone, these developments reflect the state’s commitment to positioning itself as a premier tourism and hospitality hub in India. The influx of new hotels and tourism projects is expected to not only elevate the overall infrastructure but also attract more investors, further strengthening West Bengal’s status in the tourism and hospitality industry.
