Today, WestJet revealed its acquisition of five brand-new Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft, contributing to the airline’s substantial multi-billion-dollar investment in its orderbook. Anticipated to be delivered in early 2025, these additions come after finalizing leasing agreements with China Development Bank Financial Leasing Co., Ltd. (CDB Aviation) for three planes and international aircraft leasing company Avolon for two.

Mike Scott, WestJet Group’s Executive Vice-President and Chief Financial Officer, expressed excitement about the imminent inclusion of these five aircraft into the 737 MAX family. Scott highlighted the significance of this move in furthering the airline’s forecasted fleet expansion and supporting its mission to offer affordable and diverse air travel options.

As Canada’s premier coast-to-coast leisure champion and western home carrier, WestJet aims to accelerate its growth strategy by expanding its fleet in alignment with its low-cost foundation. With this latest development, WestJet’s narrowbody orderbook now positions it to receive up to 22 Boeing 737 MAX airplanes by the end of 2025 and potentially an additional 62 by the end of 2028, making it the largest among all Canadian airlines.

Jie Chen, Chief Executive Officer of CDB Aviation, highlighted the environmental focus of the collaboration, expressing satisfaction in supporting WestJet’s fleet expansion with three new, fuel-efficient B737-8 aircraft leased directly from their orderbook. Paul Geaney, President and Chief Commercial Officer of Avolon, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the positive trajectory of the aviation sector, particularly in North America, and the company’s enthusiasm in providing a strategic fleet solution to WestJet.
