Anchorage, the city in Alaska, is currently witnessing a significant snowfall event, setting a new record and prompting an intensive response from municipal and state crews. These teams are working tirelessly to ensure roadways are clear and safe for travel, an effort that is crucial for maintaining the city’s bustling tourism industry, especially during the winter season.

Paul Vanlandingham, the street maintenance manager for the Municipality of Anchorage, has reported that the crews are focusing on the primary roads, known as arterial and collector roads. The nature of the snowfall, described as “light and fluffy” since Sunday, has made plowing operations somewhat easier compared to the wet and heavy snow experienced last November. However, this type of snow poses its own challenges, notably reducing visibility, a significant concern on high-speed arterials and highways. Vanlandingham advises drivers to exercise caution by slowing down and allowing for increased stopping distances.

The plan is for plows to start addressing residential areas by Monday night or Tuesday morning, with the goal of clearing these streets by the weekend. This timeline, however, hinges on the development of the snowstorm in the following days.

Justin Shelby from the State Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) notes that his crews have been active since the onset of the snowfall over the weekend. They have had to make several passes on the highways to keep them clear. DOT&PF had initiated snow haul operations a few weeks prior but has temporarily halted these operations due to the current snow conditions.

This extraordinary snowfall event in Anchorage could have a ripple effect on the city’s tourism sector. While the winter season often attracts tourists eager for snowy adventures, excessive snowfall and the ensuing road clearance efforts could lead to travel disruptions. Visitors might face delays or rerouted plans, and local tourism operators could see a temporary dip in activity.

Tourists planning to visit Anchorage during this period should stay informed about the weather conditions and road statuses. Local authorities and tourism offices are likely to provide regular updates, ensuring that both residents and visitors can navigate the city safely and enjoy its winter offerings.
