In a significant move aimed at shaping the future of the Travel & Tourism sector, the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) has issued a compelling ‘Call to Action’ today, urging EU stakeholders to rally behind a sector that employs over 22 million people and contributes €1.4 trillion to the European Union’s economy.
This call highlights three pivotal areas for modernizing and bolstering the sector, with the aim of realizing its potential to contribute €1.9 trillion to the European Union’s economy by 2033.
According to WTTC forecasts, by 2033, the Travel & Tourism sector is expected to achieve this groundbreaking figure, equivalent to one in ten euros in the European Union’s economy. Additionally, the Economic Impact Research (EIR) from WTTC predicts that the sector will generate almost 4 million new jobs by 2033, reaching 26.4 million – accounting for one in every eight jobs across the EU.
Fostering a more sustainable future is a key priority for WTTC, which is urging the EU to conduct policy impact assessments to ensure that the transition to a green and sustainable future is feasible. Furthermore, WTTC advocates for policies that streamline travel across borders, including simplifying visa processes, to stimulate growth and create more job opportunities.
Moreover, WTTC emphasizes the importance of digitalization in the sector and calls upon the European Union to accelerate the adoption of cutting-edge technologies to enhance efficiency, reduce costs, and foster economic growth. This includes policies supporting contactless travel and the innovative use of AI across the sector.
Julia Simpson, President & CEO of WTTC, underscored the significance of these measures in ensuring the sustainable growth of the Travel & Tourism sector, attracting new talent, and fostering prosperity. She urged the EU to adopt these recommendations for the benefit of businesses and travelers globally.
As Europe enters a new political era, these key areas outlined in WTTC’s ‘Call to Action’ are crucial for pragmatic policy implementation, providing the necessary support the sector urgently requires. WTTC emphasizes the opportunity for the EU’s Travel & Tourism sector to remain competitive and achieve greater success through continued growth and resilience, provided these actions are implemented.
