During a council meeting on March 26, Wyndham City Council made a decisive advancement in sustainable urban planning by endorsing the Wyndham Stadium Precinct Integrated Strategic Plan (ISP) for Tarneit. This approval reflects a collective aspiration for a dynamic, habitable, and well-connected community, highlighting a significant leap in the city’s development and livability goals.

The formulation of the ISP was a collaborative effort involving contributions from Global South, Arup, and LatStudios consultants, as well as input from landowners, government bodies, council officers, and other stakeholders. The strategy delineates a comprehensive framework for the future development of the Oakbank Precinct Structure Plan (PSP), prospective modifications to the Riverdale PSP, and the design framework for the Riverdale Major Town Centre. A key objective of the plan is to harmonize the integration of the A-League Stadium at 1160 Sayers Road with its environs, including the anticipated Sayers Road railway station and the Riverdale Major Town Centre, to cultivate a sustainable and habitable urban milieu.

The plan’s cornerstone is the establishment of four cohesive neighborhoods that adhere to the 20-minute neighborhood concept, emphasizing the importance of accessibility and connectivity. Proposals under this plan notably include shifting Sayers Road to eliminate its divisive impact on the stadium, railway station, and future town center, as well as situating the Sayers Road railway station in proximity to the stadium to facilitate better access and cohesion.

Furthermore, the council’s approval grants authority to the Director of Planning & Liveability to implement minor modifications to the ISP as necessary, promoting adaptability in the planning phase. The council also acknowledged ongoing deliberations with the Victorian Planning Authority regarding the Oakbank PSP’s due diligence process, aimed at addressing initial planning concerns and laying out a detailed planning framework in subsequent council reports.

The strategic plan encompasses essential aspects of livability such as diverse housing options, targeted higher-density development, an extensive open space network, and sustainable transportation means, all intended to cultivate a dynamic community environment.

This endorsement is a crucial stride towards fulfilling Wyndham’s 2040 Vision, aligning with objectives to manage growth proficiently, augment municipal infrastructure, and establish secure, inviting communal spaces. It signifies a dedication to forward-thinking planning and development practices designed to elevate the living standards of Wyndham’s expanding population.

As the Wyndham Stadium Precinct Plan progresses, it is poised to redefine the area’s landscape, converting visionary concepts into concrete reality and establishing a model for sustainable urban development that prioritizes comprehensive planning in fostering a livable, accessible, and vibrant community for ensuing generations.
