Introducing the inaugural XTERRA Zhangjiajie Wulingyuan Trail Run, a groundbreaking addition to the XTERRA Trail Run World Series, scheduled to unfold amidst the stunning landscapes of Zhangjiajie Wulingyuan, a UNESCO World Heritage site in China, on October 26-27, 2024.

This historic event not only signifies the first international trail run hosted in the ethereal surroundings of Zhangjiajie Wulingyuan but also expands the XTERRA Trail Run World Series to unveil the mystical beauty of the region. Athletes worldwide are invited to partake in an extraordinary journey through the legendary “Avatar Mountain,” where natural wonders and cultural richness converge in a harmonious blend.

J-D Cousens, XTERRA VP Operations & Marketing, affirms, “XTERRA has earned global recognition for organizing top-tier off-road events. The introduction of the XTERRA Trail Run World Series to Zhangjiajie Wulingyuan underscores our commitment to exploring exceptional destinations, providing athletes with an extraordinary and unforgettable experience.”

Revealing the Hidden Treasures of Zhangjiajie

Zhangjiajie Wulingyuan, celebrated for its majestic sandstone pillars and enchanting vistas, sets the stage for a trailblazing course featuring 21K and 50K distances. As participants navigate dense jungle trails, they will uncover the hidden gems of this mystical region, with each twist and turn revealing breathtaking views and challenging terrain. The meticulously designed course promises to test the mettle of runners with rocky ascents, winding paths, and substantial elevation gain.

Landry Benoit, XTERRA’s APAC Technical Director, expresses excitement about reopening these forgotten trails, while Nico Lebrun, XTERRA Global Technical Director and former XTERRA World Champion, advises athletes to be prepared for a challenging 50K, likely one of the toughest in the Trail Run World Series.

Embracing Local Traditions and Culture

Aligning with XTERRA’s mission to foster cultural connections, the event immerses runners in the traditions of Tujia, Bai, and Miao ethnicities, constituting 77% of Zhangjiajie’s population. Beyond the sport, participants and spectators can engage with vibrant customs, savor local cuisine, and witness traditional expressions, creating a holistic experience that celebrates the region’s rich diversity.

The Zhangjiajie Wulingyuan Cultural Tourism and Sports Bureau emphasizes the event’s role in promoting outdoor sports and showcasing local heritage, solidifying Zhangjiajie Wulingyuan as a global trail running and cultural destination.

Zhangjiajie’s Road to the XTERRA Trail Run World Championship

As a key stop in the XTERRA Trail Run World Series, the Zhangjiajie event serves as a qualifier for the 2025 XTERRA Trail Run World Championship. With 232 slots available, participants in the 21K and 50K races can earn their place on the starting line, vying for the coveted title of XTERRA Trail Run World Champion.
