Air India has opened a new Maharaja Lounge at San Francisco International Airport, expanding its premium ground experience in North America and reinforcing its strategy to elevate international travel standards across key global gateways.

The lounge, scheduled to begin operations on 23 May 2026, is part of the airline’s broader transformation programme aimed at redefining its long-haul passenger journey. Positioned near Gate A1 in the International Terminal, the facility is designed to serve as a dedicated retreat for premium travellers before departure on transpacific and international routes.

Covering more than 3,300 square feet, the Maharaja Lounge has been designed to accommodate up to 80 guests at a time. Entry is available to First Class and Business Class passengers, along with Platinum and Gold members of the Maharaja Club loyalty programme. Within the lounge, a specially designated First Class enclave offers a more secluded environment for passengers seeking enhanced privacy and personalised attention.

This new opening marks another step in Air India’s evolving global lounge network, following the introduction of its flagship Maharaja Lounge in Delhi. Together, these spaces reflect a renewed focus on delivering a consistent premium identity across both domestic and international hubs, aligning ground services with upgraded inflight products and refreshed cabin experiences.

San Francisco has been selected as a strategic location due to its strong role as a West Coast gateway between India and the United States. The airport handles significant volumes of business travellers, students, tourists, and diaspora traffic, making it one of the airline’s most important international touchpoints. The new lounge is expected to enhance the experience of passengers on these long-haul journeys by offering a more comfortable and curated pre-flight environment.

The design of the lounge has been developed by global hospitality design firm Hirsch Bedner Associates, known for its work in luxury hotels and premium airport spaces. The interior concept blends contemporary styling with subtle references to Indian aesthetics, creating a space that reflects both global sophistication and cultural identity.

A refined palette of champagne, ivory, and deep red shapes the visual tone of the lounge, supported by signature design motifs that align with Air India’s refreshed brand direction. The space incorporates layered textures, ambient lighting, and thoughtfully planned zones to create a sense of flow between relaxation, dining, and social areas.

Art plays a central role in the lounge experience, with installations contributed by local creators and select pieces made from repurposed aircraft components. These design elements add a narrative layer to the space, connecting aviation heritage with modern sustainability themes.

The lounge layout has been structured to support different types of travellers. Quiet seating areas provide space for rest, while open social zones encourage interaction among passengers. Work-friendly sections include charging points and connectivity features designed for business travellers who require productivity before departure.

At the heart of the lounge is the “Aviator’s Bar”, styled as a semi-hidden speakeasy-inspired space. It offers a curated beverage selection that includes wines, whiskies, and signature cocktails, creating a relaxed yet premium atmosphere distinct from standard airport lounge offerings.

Dining within the lounge is designed to reflect both variety and freshness. Guests can choose from a mix of Indian and international dishes served through buffet counters and live cooking stations. The live preparation element ensures continuous availability of freshly made food, while also introducing a more interactive dining experience.

The culinary approach aims to represent Air India’s identity while remaining accessible to a diverse international passenger base. Indian flavours remain a strong focus, complemented by global cuisine options suited to a wide range of preferences.

A separate First Class Private Zone elevates the exclusivity of the lounge experience further. This area is designed for passengers who prefer additional privacy, offering a quieter atmosphere and enhanced service attention away from the main lounge activity.

Large windows throughout the lounge provide clear views of aircraft movements on the tarmac, adding a dynamic aviation backdrop to the environment. This visual connection to airport operations reinforces the travel experience and offers passengers a sense of anticipation before boarding.

The San Francisco lounge forms part of Air India’s wider investment in premium travel infrastructure as the airline continues to modernise its fleet and service standards. In recent years, the carrier has focused on improving consistency across its global network through upgraded aircraft interiors, digital enhancements, and redesigned customer touchpoints.

As competition intensifies in the international aviation market, airlines are increasingly prioritising airport lounges as key brand spaces rather than simple waiting areas. These environments now play a central role in shaping passenger perception, particularly among premium travellers who expect comfort, privacy, and high-quality service before flights.

With the launch of its Maharaja Lounge in San Francisco, Air India strengthens its position in one of its most important international markets while continuing to refine its global identity. The new space reflects a balance between modern luxury and traditional hospitality, supporting the airline’s goal of delivering a more unified and elevated travel experience across its international network.
