A major step in Canadian passport renewal has been introduced, with online passport renewals now being made available to all eligible Canadian adults living in Canada. Through the expanded digital service, an application, a commercially taken photograph and the required payment can be submitted electronically. For Canadian travellers, greater convenience is being brought to one of the most important stages of international journey planning. Passport administration can now be completed from home, while application progress can be followed through real-time status updates. Nationwide Access Is Being Extended to Eligible Adults

The expansion was announced by the Government of Canada on 28 July 2026 in Vancouver. Online renewal had already been offered through a controlled rollout, but restrictions on the number of users who could access the service have now been removed. As a result, the digital option is being opened to all eligible adult Canadians whose home and mailing addresses are located in Canada.

The service is being delivered through the IRCC Portal – New Version. An account must be created or accessed before the application can be started. The renewal form, digital photograph and payment can then be submitted through the platform.

A complete renewal process can consequently be handled without documents being posted or an application being presented at a physical counter. In-person and mail-in services are still being retained, meaning applicants who cannot or do not wish to use the digital platform are not being excluded.

The modernisation is particularly important for people in rural and remote communities. Long journeys to service locations may now be avoided. People facing mobility difficulties or other barriers to in-person services are also expected to be supported more effectively by the expanded system.

Clear Eligibility Rules Must Be Followed

Online renewal is not being offered for every passport-related situation. Several conditions must be satisfied before an application can be submitted through the portal.

An applicant must be renewing their own passport and must have both a home address and mailing address in Canada. The applicant must also remain in Canada to receive the renewed document. Passports renewed online are not currently being delivered to addresses outside Canada.

The existing passport must either be expired or due to expire within the next six months. If more than six months of validity remain, an online renewal cannot be submitted. This distinction should be checked before travel arrangements are finalised.

The same name, date of birth, place of birth and gender identifier shown in the current passport must be retained. If any of those details need to be changed, another application route may be required.

The current document must not be damaged, seized or surrendered. Online renewal is also unavailable when a passport previously reported as lost or stolen has subsequently been found but has not been returned to the authorities. Passports containing observations are not eligible for the online process either.

Observations are notes placed on a separate passport page to explain special circumstances. These may include situations in which a name was too long to be printed in full or cases involving a diplomatic passport.

Commercial Digital Photography Is Required

A compliant digital passport photograph must be supplied with every online application. The photograph must be taken in person by a commercial photographer and must be no more than six months old when the renewal request is submitted.

A printed photograph cannot simply be scanned and uploaded. Instead, a genuine digital file must be provided by the commercial photographer. The detailed technical and composition requirements published by the Government of Canada must also be followed.

Applicants may benefit from requesting both a digital and printed version during the photography appointment. Flexibility can then be retained if the application route needs to be changed from online renewal to an in-person or mail submission.

By requiring commercially produced photographs, identity and document-security standards are being maintained while the application process is moved online. Convenience is therefore being increased without the passport photograph requirement being removed or significantly relaxed.

Travel Dates Must Be Checked Before Applying

The most important consideration for travellers is the timing of an online renewal. Up to 20 business days can be required to process the application, and mailing time must be added. The online process should only be used when the passport will not be needed during that period.

Once an online renewal application has been submitted, the current passport is cancelled. It cannot continue to be used while the replacement document is being processed. A traveller with a departure approaching within 20 business days, plus the expected delivery period, could therefore face serious disruption if the digital option were selected.

Applicants requiring a passport sooner are directed to apply in person at a Service Canada Centre or passport office offering faster service. Depending on urgency and location, 10-business-day, express or urgent services may be available.

The online system should therefore be regarded as a planning tool for non-urgent travel. It is most suitable when a passport’s approaching expiry has been identified well before an international journey.

Canadians Living Abroad Must Use Existing Channels

The expanded online service is restricted to people whose home and mailing addresses are in Canada. Canadians applying from another country cannot currently have an online renewal delivered abroad.
