Saudi Arabia and Thailand have entered a new phase of aviation connectivity following the launch of Riyadh Air’s direct service between Riyadh and Bangkok. The new connection strengthens Thailand’s access to one of the Middle East’s important high-value travel markets while giving passengers in Saudi Arabia another non-stop option for reaching the Thai capital.

The service links King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh with Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok. Riyadh Air began the route with three weekly flights using Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft, placing Thailand firmly within the expanding international network of Saudi Arabia’s new national carrier.

For Thailand, however, this is about more than another international flight. The additional capacity arrives as the country works to attract more visitors from Saudi Arabia and the wider Middle East, particularly families and travellers interested in premium holidays, shopping, wellness, medical services and leisure experiences.

Riyadh and Bangkok Gain New Direct Connection

Riyadh Air’s first service on the new route departed Riyadh on 2 September 2026, with the inaugural arrival welcomed in Bangkok on 3 September.

The airline initially operates three services each week from Riyadh, with departures on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Return services from Bangkok operate on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.

The route is being served by a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner configured with 290 seats.

This initial schedule is expected to provide approximately 3,840 inbound seats to Thailand each month. The frequency is also scheduled to increase to seven flights per week in October 2026, giving the market a daily connection if the planned schedule proceeds.

That increase would considerably strengthen the air corridor between the Saudi and Thai capitals and make Thailand more accessible to passengers travelling from the Kingdom.

Thailand Sees Saudi Arabia as a Valuable Tourism Market

The importance of the new flight becomes clearer when Saudi visitor behaviour is considered.

Thailand’s tourism authorities regard the Middle East as a strategically important long-haul market with substantial spending potential. Saudi travellers are particularly attractive because their holidays can involve longer stays and significant expenditure.

Saudi visitors typically spend around 10 to 12 days in Thailand and approximately 110,000 baht per person during a trip.

Their interests extend across several parts of Thailand’s visitor economy. Shopping, beaches, natural attractions, Thai food, medical services and wellness experiences are among the products attracting demand.

Family travel is another important element of the Saudi market. This gives Thailand opportunities across hotels, resorts, restaurants, retail businesses, healthcare providers, attractions and destination services.

Saudi Tourism Demand Extends Beyond Bangkok

Bangkok remains one of Thailand’s principal gateways, but Saudi travel demand is not confined to the capital.

Phuket and Pattaya remain established destinations for international travellers, while interest from Saudi visitors is increasingly extending towards Krabi, Phang-nga, Ko Samui and Chiang Mai.

This geographical spread could make the Riyadh Air service valuable beyond Bangkok itself.

Passengers arriving at Suvarnabhumi can continue to domestic destinations, allowing the additional international capacity to feed Thailand’s wider tourism network. As travellers explore more destinations, tourism expenditure can potentially reach hotels, restaurants, attractions and local businesses outside the traditional international gateways.

This supports Thailand’s wider ambition to distribute tourism more broadly and encourage visitors to discover different parts of the country.

New Flight Arrives as Thailand Works to Rebuild Saudi Arrivals

The route also arrives at an important moment for Thailand’s Saudi tourism market.

Thailand recorded 121,907 arrivals from Saudi Arabia in 2026 up to the period reported by the Tourism Authority of Thailand. That compared with 142,774 arrivals during the corresponding period of 2025, representing a decline of 14.62%.

The figures make stronger air connectivity particularly relevant.

More direct capacity cannot by itself guarantee visitor growth, but convenient flights can remove an important barrier for international travellers. Combined with destination marketing, competitive fares, suitable accommodation and visitor services, improved connectivity can help tourism authorities and businesses reach prospective travellers more effectively.

Thailand is therefore using aviation partnerships alongside wider promotional efforts aimed at rebuilding momentum from Saudi Arabia and the broader Middle Eastern market.

Luxury Wellness and Family Travel Shape Thailand Strategy

Thailand is positioning its tourism offering around several segments that align closely with Middle Eastern travel preferences.

Luxury holidays are one important area, supported by Thailand’s large selection of premium hotels, resorts and private experiences.

Wellness and medical tourism represent another major opportunity. Thailand has an established international reputation for hospitality, healthcare and wellness services, allowing destinations to combine treatment or wellbeing programmes with conventional holidays.

Shopping, gastronomy and beach tourism further strengthen the country’s appeal.

Thailand is also developing and promoting Muslim-friendly visitor services. Halal dining and suitable tourism facilities can make travel easier for Muslim families and help destinations compete more effectively for visitors from Saudi Arabia and neighbouring Middle Eastern countries.

Middle East Becomes More Important for Thailand Tourism

Thailand’s focus extends well beyond Saudi Arabia.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand has been strengthening its engagement across the Middle East, including markets such as the United Arab Emirates, Oman and Qatar.

Its tourism strategy has increasingly connected aviation access with premium accommodation, wellness, family experiences, shopping and year-round travel.

This is particularly significant during the Middle Eastern summer travel period. July to September represents an important outbound season as families seek international holidays during school breaks and periods of intense summer heat across parts of the Gulf.

Thailand can use its beaches, resorts, natural landscapes, urban attractions, shopping and wellness infrastructure to compete for this demand.

Riyadh Air Builds Its Asian Network

The Bangkok route is equally important from Riyadh Air’s perspective.

Bangkok became the airline’s 14th destination placed on sale as Riyadh Air continues building an international network designed to connect Saudi Arabia with major global markets.

Asia is a critical part of that development.

The Bangkok service creates another direct bridge between Riyadh and Southeast Asia while supporting Riyadh Air’s broader ambition to establish the Saudi capital as an international connecting hub.

The carrier has set a longer-term goal of developing a network of more than 100 destinations by 2030.

Bangkok therefore serves both point-to-point passengers and the broader strategic objective of connecting Riyadh with major international tourism and commercial centres.

Stronger Flights Could Deepen Saudi-Thai Tourism Ties

The new service also reflects improving economic and travel relations between Saudi Arabia and Thailand.

Direct aviation links can support more than holiday traffic. They can facilitate business trips, investment activity, official travel and cultural exchanges while improving access for travellers in both directions.

For Thailand’s tourism industry, the immediate opportunity lies in converting additional airline capacity into sustained visitor demand.

The challenge will be attracting travellers who stay longer, spend across multiple sectors and explore destinations beyond the best-known gateways.

Saudi Arabia-Thailand Air Link Opens New Tourism Opportunity

The launch of Riyadh Air’s Riyadh-Bangkok service marks a significant development in air connectivity between Saudi Arabia and Thailand.

Starting with three weekly Boeing 787-9 flights and with daily services planned from October 2026, the route provides Thailand with additional direct capacity from a strategically valuable Middle Eastern market.

More importantly, it complements Thailand’s wider tourism strategy.

Saudi visitors’ interest in family holidays, luxury accommodation, shopping, beaches, wellness and medical tourism makes the market particularly relevant for Thailand’s effort to increase tourism value rather than simply chase visitor numbers.

With stronger direct connectivity and targeted tourism promotion working together, the new Riyadh-Bangkok air bridge could help Thailand rebuild Saudi arrivals while extending the benefits towards destinations including Phuket, Krabi, Chiang Mai, Ko Samui and Phang-nga.

For Riyadh Air, the route adds another important Asian destination to its growing network. For Thailand, it provides a new gateway to the high-spending Middle Eastern travel market at a time when stronger aviation access could play an important role in the country’s next phase of tourism growth.
