After a 6.3 magnitude earthquake rocked Luzon, several domestic and international flights in Philippines’ Clark International Airport scheduled for April 22 and 23 were cancelled.
The site of Clark Airport is known to have the earthquake’s epicenter located near the Castillejos, Zambales which is a province in the north Pampanga. More than 150,000 passengers were left stranded and the airport was severely damaged. The pictures on social media revealed that parts of the roof collapsed into the check-in hall and several people were injured.
Jaime Melo, president of the Clark International Airport Corporation (CIAC) said that part of the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) tower has cracks and the airport was closed until further notice.
The tower was structurally sound but safety was paramount for the airport.
Department of Transportation Arthur Tugade ordered airlines that they take care of the passengers and should not shoulder any fees to rebook their flights.
Free bus ride from airport to Ninoy Aquino International Airport has been offered free bus ride. Repairs are expected to start today and the CIAC was assessing the extent of damages and repairs. Some of the flights were diverted to NAIA and the passengers in Philippines were suggested to coordinate with their respective airlines.
Several Airlines like the as Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific and Philippines Air Asia. Qatar Airways and Emirates are operative from Clark.
Services from several other Asian carriers like in China, Korea, Japan, Singapore and Hong Kong are also available through CIAC. It was reported that more than 2.6 million passengers travelled through Clark Airport last year .
