As reported the EU proposal has been backed by the Germany’s interior Ministry permitting the Britons to enter the Schengen zone without a visa.

There are guidelines for the country’s 16 states detailed in a five page letter but no information was provided on the processing procedure for the Brits visiting Germany for longer periods.

The UK Ambassador to Germany mentioned that the move was expected and Sir Sebastian Wood, a British diplomat stated that the European Commission proposed that the UK was placed on its list of visa-free countries.

This implies that the UK nationals will not require a visa for short visits be it for tourism or business.

EU and individual Member States will decide on the stays longer than 90 in every 180 days.  The most up-to-date information on entry requirement for travellers is provided by the FCO(Foreign and Commonwealth Office).

According to a report after Brexit, all UK nationals living in Germany have to apply for a residence permit if they want to live in the country.

There was assurance from the government that no-one will be refused a permit and forced to leave though. The Interior Ministry in the briefing advised states to guarantee residency rights to Britons.

Axel Dittmann, who is head of Germany’s Brexit Task Force said that no  British would have to leave Germany as a result of Brexit, including pensioners and welfare recipients.

The transition period for Brits in the event of a no-deal will be extended by the Germany government from three months to nine months. This will give people more time to prepare and apply for a permit.

For groups like pensioners, unemployed people or low earners to meet the requirements for a permit the authorities are looking forward to form a new law.

The foreigners authorities were further advised by the government to get the message out that permit are needed by the Britons.

There was call for close coordination of the government with the EU by the Franziska Brantner, spokeswoman for European policy for the Greens in the Bundestag.

Legal security will be needed by British citizens who already live in Germany and the German government  will be  strengthening  the cohesion of the EU in the course of further negotiations with Great Britain.
