In an opinion poll titled “Travel World Cup”, posted by British newspaper The Telegraph, that compared World Cup groups as travel destinations, Egypt was nominated as the voters’ most popular travel destination within group A. Interestingly, taking over Russia and Uruguay and less amazingly taking over Saudi Arabia.
On 14th June, Telegraph Travel posted a tweet urging twitter users “Which of the Group A teams is your favourite holiday destination?” Out of 880 votes, Egypt came first with 37 percent of the quota, followed by Uruguay, which succeeded 33 percent of the votes and Russia which came third, winning 17 percent of the votes. And lastly, Saudi Arabia remains at the end of the list with only 11 percent of the votes.
The consequence comes after a tough period for Egyptian tourism. As the Arab Spring in 2011, tourism of Egypt witnessed a sharp drop. The number of visitors declined from 14 million visitors in 2010 to 9 million by the end of 2011. The drop continued as 2014 went through yet another low phase for Egyptian tourism. In 2014, the numbers of tourists were 25 percent less than the number of tourists who came to Egypt during the same period in 2013.
Nevertheless, since then, Egypt has achieved a lot of the ground it missed as a travel destination. In last year, Bloomberg positioned Egypt as one of its top 20 travel destinations, saying the country has “shed its years of social and political unrest.”
