After witnessing demand getting destroyed at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, WestJet is hoping to experience some tough situations of a different sort as bookings recover.
“We saw literally 90 per cent of our demand drop away overnight,” Angela Avery, executive VP of external affairs, told a virtual roundtable.
Avery explained that since the spring of 2020, WestJet lost 82 per cent of its guests but is witnessing the demand to return slowly.
WestJet polling across the country shows that in the next six month, over 60 per cent of the people from Canada are willing to travel domestically. This is mostly to visit their family members who they haven’t seen for long through the earlier parts of the pandemic.
Avery also mentioned that more than one fifth of Canadians expect coming to Alberta for family and tourism trips.
She explained that for upcoming trips, a third of Canadians are looking stateside a third are seeking Mexico and the Caribbean to enjoy sunny destinations, and a fifth have their eye on European destinations.
