On January 8th, the first Janshatabdi Express train connecting Assam, Manipur and Tripura – was officially started by the railways minister, Mr. Ashwini Vaishnaw.
While delivering a speech on the occasion, Union DoNER (Development of North Eastern Region) minister, G. Kishan Reddy, explained that this much-anticipated train service would boost Northeast trade and tourism sector.
This Janshatabdi tri-weekly service would connect towns like Silchar, Badarpur, New Karimganj (all in Assam), Dharmanagar and Ambassa (in Tripura) apart from Jiribam (Manipur) and Agartala (Tripura) – the two terminal stations.
As per Guneet Kaur, the chief public relations officer of the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), the train journey would reduce the travel time by half as the journey time will be around six hours covering a distance of 300 kms against about 12 hours travel by road.
Reddy appreciated the efforts of the Prime Minister, Mr. Narendra Modi, for the idea to work with the ‘HIRA’ model (Highway, Internet, Railways and Airways) for the growth and expansion of the Northeast states.
Railway minister, Vaishnaw, explained that this train service would connect the culture of Northeast states.
The proposed Imphal-Moreh (along India-Myanmar border) rail section would be a very strategic line. He also said that this would improve the relationship between India and other Southeast Asian countries, adding that efforts would be made to expedite the work of the Agartala-Akhaura (Bangladesh) rail project.
