From March, many groups representing tourism operators in the south and east of the country, along with the Thai Hotels Association, are requesting for all entry restrictions to get lifted. The groups have written an open letter to the PM, Prayut Chan-o-cha, and other officials of the government urging from March to reopen the country fully to all foreign tourists.
The groups in the letter have explained that they want all entry restrictions to get removed, including the Thailand Pass and PCR testing on arrival. Also, now they want Covid-19 to be declared as endemic. They point to several other countries, including Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and the UK, where almost all restrictions related to Covid have been removed and the virus declared endemic.
“Thailand needs to further relax Covid-19 restrictions for tourists now, or else it may lose the ability to compete with other nations.”
Lately, the Philippines has raised the PCR testing protocol on arrival for foreign tourists, while Vietnam has confirmed that in March, it’ll re-open to all foreign tourism. Entry requirements to Vietnam are similar to what Thailand had originally implemented– before Test & Go was given an alteration. For 24 hours, foreign arrivals have to quarantine and test negative for Covid-19 before departure and upon arrival.
The tourism representatives in their letter have said that the government is in need to do away with repeat PCR tests from March for foreign tourists. They have added that for tourism, April is an important month as for foreigners, Easter is a popular time to travel and many come to Thailand for the Songkran holiday.
The letter goes on to mentioning that the low infections found during PCR tests on overseas arrivals. Using data from Phuket between February 1 and 13, the letter states that the infection rate among overseas arrivals was 2.17% on day 1 and 3.56% on day 5.
