The Best places to visit in the United Kingdom

The United Kingdom is one of the best countries to spend your vacation. From the beautiful countryside cottages to the vast metropolises and even the historical cities, there are many interesting places to visit in the country.

1. The British Museum

Their collection of anitiquities ranks amongst the world’s finest. The British Museum holds more than 13 million artifacts from Assyria, Babylonia, Egypt, Greece, the Roman Empire, China, and Europe. The Elgin Marbles from the Parthenon in Athens and the famous Rosetta Stone are a must watch.

The Ancient Egyptian collection at the British Museum is the largest outside of Cairo, and their hoard of Roman silver dating from the 4th century known also known as the Mildenhall Treasure, which was unearthed in Suffolk in 1942, are nothing short of spectacular.

• Chester Zoo

Just over a mile north of Chester city center in Upton, the Chester Zoo is a very popular attraction. In this 125-acre site, more than 11,000 animals live and represent 400 different species. The prizewinning landscaped gardens are also available for visitors to enjoy besides the sprawling zoo.

The visitors can use the zoo’s monorail system to travel to Chimpanzee Island, a penguin pool, and Europe’s largest tropical house. Chester’s galleried walkways known as the “Chester’ Rows”, are impressive. These medieval architectural gems run the full length of stone and half-timbered buildings date from the 14th century. The Chester Cathedral is also an architectural gem and is worth exploring.

• Liverpool and the Beatles

Liverpool breathes the Beatles. It is just two hours away by rail, and offers music fans plenty of opportunities to soak up some city sites, along with Fab-Four-related attractions. In the revitalized Albert Dock area of the city, The Beatles Story, is a fun museum that features facts and exhibits to keep the biggest fans busy for hours.

Strawberry Fields and the Penny Lane are the places where the Fab Four sang and one can feel the atmosphere there in all its glory. The Cavern Club in Liverpool is also another famous place one can visit. The guided tours, to visit the former homes of Paul McCartney and John Lennon can be extremely rewarding, and getting in some souvenir shopping at The Beatles Shop, located just steps away from the Cavern Club is a must.

• Warwick Castle

Warwick on the River Avon is the home to the Warwick Castle, this fortress has dominated the surrounding landscape for over 900 years. It serves as the backdrop to medieval-themed events and reenactments, from jousting festivals to fairs and concerts.

The city can also be used as a tourism base from which one can explore the Cotswolds, as well as nearby towns such as Stratford-upon-Avon, famous as the birthplace of William Shakespeare. Liverpool, hometown of The Beatles, as well as Birmingham and Coventry, are an easy drive away.

• Royal Museums Greenwich

Greenwich is the London base of the Royal Navy and holds England’s largest expanses of preserved historic architecture and parks. It is downstream from the Tower Bridge and the Cutty Sark, the the last surviving of the 19th-century clippers from the lucrative tea trade between Britain and China, is the most famous tourist attraction in the Museums. It was the fastest ship of its day, and one can board it to explore the clipper, from its figure head to the sailors’ quarters below decks.

The Discover Greenwich Visitor Centre, showcases more than 500 years of maritime history. In Queen’s House, the National Maritime Museum is the largest of its kind in the world, featuring the Royal Navy from Tudor times to the Napoleonic Wars.
