The Indian government will shortly begin a pilot project, under which goods and services tax (GST) paid by tourists visiting India from abroad will be repaid, for implementing a measure that is there in the decree.

Concerning the GST, it’s the Integrated GST Act that was passed five years before, providing repayment on goods, which would be taken outside the county by a traveler, who is not an Indian resident, and has remained in the country for less than 6 months for non-immigrant reasons.

As per reports, majority of countries adhere to a system of GST or VAT repayment for tourists for intake outside the country, as levies are normally not exported. It is a code followed in tax-free shops at airports also.

Government sources said that with the GST rule relaxing, the Center is setting up the supposed pilot, which at first will comprise outlets like the Cottage Industries Emporium. Based on the familiarity, it will be lengthened.

With reference to this, tax authorities have opined that quite a lot of changes will be essential for executing the supposed plan and it will take time. At the outset, even for a pilot, the guidelines to operationalize the plan will need to be set up, whereas the billing method will also need to be updated, which will probably need an alteration the GST Network architecture.
