West Virginia, for some people has long been a place to enjoy outdoor activities. Visitors mainly come for hiking, skiing, and whitewater rafting together with riding ATVs.

As the pandemic disturbed majority of the economies of the world, including tourism, it in fact gave things in the Mountain State a major enhancement.

From Gov. Jim Justice’s office, a recent press release has said that West Virginia’s tourism industry has risen 3.8 percent compared to pre-pandemic levels. All through the country, the tourism is down 27 percent compared to 2019.

The employment in the industry has not kept up, even with the rise in West Virginia tourism.
As per Chelsea Ruby, the Secretary of Tourism, West Virginia, employment often delays a couple of years behind visitor spending.

Ruby said that halfway through 2017, 2018, what they all saw was traveler spending rising actually in a jet propelled way. They were growing the national rate of growth by about 58 percent. And, the year 2019 come by. During this time, huge increase was seen, where employment was actually the highest what it had been in the previous decade, as it was starting to catch up with that spending growth.

The leisure and hospitality sector, as per the information from Workforce West Virginia, employs approximately 69,000 people. However that’s actually 4,000 fewer people than in 2011. Ruby uses somewhat different data representing only those who work in tourism and hospitality in the actual sense.
