Hyatt notes business travelers relax and recover from their workday and view hotel rooms as their personal space for “off-the-clock” relaxation. Hyatt’s commissioned research shows that 90% of business travelers feel hotel rooms are the only locations during a work trip where they feel “off the clock.”

The findings highlight a major shift in corporate travel expectations, showing that accommodation is no longer viewed only as a place to sleep between meetings. Travellers are seeking privacy, comfort and opportunities to disconnect once professional responsibilities are complete.

The research found that nearly half of business travellers, 47%, would prefer spending their free time relaxing alone in their hotel room rather than attending optional networking events or additional work-related gatherings. For many professionals, personal downtime has become an essential part of maintaining balance during business trips.

Some travellers are taking creative approaches to protect their private time. The study revealed that people are using tactics such as adding fake meetings to their calendars or creating unusual excuses to avoid optional events. Humorous examples include claiming they need to care for a pet anaconda or attend family video calls, reflecting the lengths some travellers will go to enjoy uninterrupted personal moments.

Although these examples are light-hearted, they point to a deeper trend in business travel. Professionals increasingly want travel experiences that support wellbeing, flexibility and a healthier separation between work commitments and personal time.

Hyatt’s research underlines the expanding role hotels play in helping business travellers feel comfortable and refreshed. Beyond providing accommodation, hotels are becoming important spaces where guests can recharge, relax and regain energy after busy schedules.

Hyatt’s Essentials portfolio, which includes Hyatt Place, Hyatt House and Hyatt Studios, is designed around the everyday needs of modern travellers. The brands focus on delivering convenient amenities, comfortable environments and reliable experiences that help guests feel at ease wherever their work journeys take them.

“Business travel has evolved and so have travelers’ expectations,” says Jason Ballard, Senior Vice President, Global Brand Leader, Essentials, Hyatt. “I travel frequently myself, and I know firsthand how much the little things can make a trip.  From a thoughtfully designed guestroom and comfortable bed to reliable Wi-Fi and breakfast before early meetings, every detail matters. We want guests to spend less time worrying about the basics and more time feeling refreshed and ready for whatever comes next.”

The Comforts That Matter Most for Business Travellers

Hyatt’s latest research highlights that business travellers are placing greater importance on comfort, reliability and convenience when choosing accommodation. Almost half of respondents, 46%, identified consistency across different stays as one of the strongest signs of a high-quality hotel experience. Meanwhile, 79% said that staying at a quality hotel has a direct positive impact on their ability to perform effectively during work trips.

When asked about the hotel features that help them remain productive while also getting enough rest, travellers highlighted several essential amenities, including comfortable beds, dependable in-room Wi-Fi, 24-hour dining options, complimentary breakfast and flexible early check-in services.

The findings support Hyatt’s continued focus on providing practical and comfortable experiences through its Essentials Portfolio. Nearly three-quarters of business travellers said they often continue working from their hotel room after the official workday ends, increasing the demand for guestrooms that can support both professional tasks and relaxation.

Hyatt’s Essentials Portfolio properties are designed to meet these changing expectations by offering dedicated work areas within guestrooms, allowing guests to easily shift between completing business responsibilities and enjoying personal downtime. Participating hotels also provide complimentary breakfast options and convenient 24-hour food and beverage services, helping travellers feel comfortable and supported throughout their stay.

Business Travel Rewards That Continue Beyond the Journey

Hotel loyalty programmes are becoming an important factor in business travel decisions. The research found that 80% of business travellers consider loyalty rewards when selecting hotels for work-related trips, showing that guests increasingly value benefits that extend beyond a single stay.

Through World of Hyatt, members can earn rewards across Hyatt’s worldwide hotel portfolio. Business travellers can collect points from eligible stays and use them towards future personal holidays while also progressing through membership tiers that offer additional benefits.

Depending on availability and eligibility, these benefits may include early check-in, late checkout, milestone rewards, free night awards and other travel advantages that enhance the overall guest experience.

Hyatt is also offering additional opportunities for World of Hyatt members staying at participating Essentials Portfolio properties. Members can benefit from limited-time promotions that provide bonus points on qualifying stays.

At participating Hyatt Place and Hyatt Select hotels, registered members can earn up to 30,000 bonus points through eligible stays of three or more consecutive nights under a limited-time promotion available until September 30, 2026.

Guests staying at participating Hyatt House and Hyatt Studios hotels can earn up to 50,000 bonus points through qualifying extended stays of five or more nights under another limited-time offer available until December 31, 2026.

Expanding Essential Stay Options Around the World

Hyatt continues to strengthen its Essentials Portfolio by expanding its presence across key destinations and offering travellers more dependable accommodation choices. The portfolio now includes more than 700 hotels across seven brands worldwide, providing guests with comfortable stays designed around modern travel needs.

During the first half of 2026, the Essentials Portfolio added nearly 70 new hotels, with further expansion planned across important business and leisure markets.

Recent and upcoming openings include properties such as Hyatt Place JFK Airport, Hyatt Select Wooster, Hyatt Studios Tallahassee / I-10, Hyatt Place Asheville Airport, Hyatt House Portland Airport, Hyatt Place Ontario Airport, Hyatt Studios Texarkana, Hyatt Studios Chesapeake, Hyatt Select Galveston – Beachfront, Hyatt Place Vancouver / Metrotown and Hyatt Studios Jacksonville / St. Johns Town Center.

The continued growth of Hyatt’s Essentials Portfolio reflects the changing expectations of today’s travellers, who are looking for accommodation that combines comfort, productivity and convenience. Whether travelling for business assignments or leisure escapes, guests can access reliable experiences supported by essential amenities and thoughtful design.

Research Details

Hyatt commissioned Talker Research to conduct a survey of 2,000 business travellers in the United States between May 29 and June 11, 2026.
