Thailand has established its link to the Middle East tourism market with the introduction of the first Riyadh Air flight from Riyadh to Bangkok, giving room for attracting valuable tourists from Saudi Arabia and beyond. The new flight landed at Suvarnabhumi Airport on 3rd September 2026 and will play a critical role in the Thai government’s plan to enhance international direct connections to encourage more tourists from long haul markets.
This route is one of the initiatives that have been put in place by the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) to boost quality tourism demand by providing easy access to tourists who wish to experience luxury travel, family holiday, wellness tours and medical tourism. The development is an outcome of increasing cooperation between Thailand and Saudi Arabia in terms of tourism, aviation, and economy.
The new Riyadh-Bangkok route represents Riyadh Air’s 14th international service, expanding the airline’s growing network while improving travel options between Saudi Arabia and Thailand. The service is operated using Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft with a capacity of 290 seats, providing passengers with modern long-haul travel facilities. Initially, the airline will operate three flights per week, with departures from Riyadh every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, while flights from Bangkok will operate every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.
From October 2026, the service is expected to increase to daily flights, significantly improving connectivity between the two countries. At the initial operating frequency, the route will provide approximately 3,840 inbound seats per month to Thailand, supporting tourism, trade, investment and economic links. The additional capacity is expected to benefit both leisure travellers and business passengers seeking more convenient connections between Saudi Arabia and Thailand.

The introduction of Riyadh Air’s Bangkok service aligns with Thailand’s focus on attracting higher-value international visitors rather than only increasing arrival numbers. Direct air connectivity is considered essential for expanding tourism markets because it reduces travel barriers and makes destinations more accessible.
Thailand is targeting segments including:
These segments are particularly important because they often generate higher spending and longer stays. The Riyadh-Bangkok route provides Saudi travellers with easier access to Thailand’s diverse tourism products, including beaches, nature experiences, cultural attractions, shopping destinations and wellness services. The new connection also strengthens Bangkok’s role as a major regional gateway, allowing visitors to continue their journeys to destinations across Thailand.
Saudi Arabia has become one of Thailand’s most promising tourism markets in the Middle East due to strong demand for leisure, family and premium travel experiences. Saudi visitors typically spend around 10 to 12 days in Thailand, with average spending estimated at approximately 110,000 Baht per person per trip.
Popular interests among Saudi travellers include:
Family travel represents a particularly important segment, with many visitors seeking destinations that provide comfortable accommodation, family-friendly activities and convenient services. Thailand’s reputation for hospitality, diverse attractions and established tourism infrastructure makes it well positioned to capture growing demand from Saudi Arabia.
To strengthen its appeal among Saudi and Middle Eastern travellers, Thailand continues developing Muslim-friendly tourism services. These efforts include expanding halal dining options, improving visitor facilities and promoting destinations that meet the needs of Muslim travellers. Thailand has been working to ensure that visitors from diverse cultural backgrounds can enjoy comfortable and convenient travel experiences.
The country’s tourism sector is increasingly focusing on personalised services that reflect different traveller preferences, including dietary requirements, family needs and cultural expectations. This approach supports Thailand’s ambition to become a more inclusive global tourism destination. By combining improved air access with enhanced services, Thailand aims to increase visitor confidence and encourage repeat travel from Middle Eastern markets.
While destinations such as Bangkok, Phuket and Pattaya remain popular among Saudi visitors, tourism demand is increasingly expanding to other parts of Thailand. Emerging destinations gaining interest include:
The expansion of visitor interest beyond traditional hotspots supports Thailand’s goal of distributing tourism benefits more widely across different regions. Encouraging travellers to explore additional destinations can help local communities benefit from international tourism while reducing pressure on heavily visited areas.
Despite the new connectivity opportunity, Thailand continues working to rebuild Saudi visitor momentum. The country recorded 121,907 arrivals from Saudi Arabia in 2026 to date, compared with 142,774 arrivals during the same period in 2025, representing a decline of 14.62 per cent. To address this challenge, TAT is implementing targeted strategies focused on stronger aviation links, digital marketing and partnerships with travel industry stakeholders.
The new Riyadh Air service is expected to play an important role in improving accessibility and supporting recovery in the Saudi market. Thailand is also strengthening promotional activities through digital platforms and online travel agencies to reach potential travellers more effectively.
The launch of the new route was followed by the “TAT x Riyadh Air – A New Era of Travel Gala Dinner 2026” held at The Athenee Hotel in Bangkok. The event brought together tourism industry representatives and officials to celebrate the new aviation partnership and discuss future cooperation opportunities. Their programme included participation from Saudi and Thai tourism representatives, highlighting the shared commitment to strengthening travel links.
The event demonstrated how aviation partnerships can support broader tourism collaboration by connecting airlines, destinations and travel businesses. Stronger cooperation between Thailand and Saudi Arabia is expected to create new opportunities for tourism promotion, investment and cultural exchange.
With the commencement of direct service from Riyadh to Bangkok by Riyadh Air, it is a very significant milestone for the efforts of Thailand in consolidating their presence in the travel market in the Middle East region. Through air connectivity, provision of more services that are suitable for Muslims and the provision of premium tourism products, Thailand is opening up new avenues for attracting visitors from Saudi Arabia.
The connection will be a boost for luxury, family, wellness and medical tourism sectors while building stronger economic relationships between the two nations. As the trend of global travelers continues to look for convenient, personalized and experience oriented travels, the direct connections like Riyadh-Bangkok will be very crucial.
